Barbara Broz Obituary

Barbara Broz

Resident of San Jose

August 20, 1934 - December 19, 2011

Born in French Camp, California, to William Charles Haley and Dorothy Isabelle Ebe, Barbara moved to San Luis Obispo, where she graduated from San Luis Obispo High, June 1951. While singing in the local church choir, and securing her first job as a clerk for San Luis Gas & Electric Co., a high school teacher gifted Barbara funds to travel and attend San Jose State College, 1956. Barbara fell-in-love and married, devoted husband of 52 years, Frank Broz, while both worked for SJ Recreation Department under director Frank Bramhall of Willow Street Park fame. Their wedding was held at SJSU's Chapel on July 25,1959, as was their 25th Anniversary; Barbara is also survived by two sons, Steven and Alan Broz, both live locally. Barbara's early career started as an attendance clerk for San Jose High School, later graduating from SJSU with a BA in English. She then entered Santa Clara County's Juvenile Hall, as a Counselor, and was soon promoted to ProbationOfficer, with badge. She facilitated Santa Clara District's high school students along the right path, always protecting both students and their parents. Barbara annually and lovingly provided new toddler clothes to the non-profit Parisi-House on the Hill, women with children, recovery program. Her community efforts and dedication secured her a nomination for the Santa Clara County Grand Jury, however she elected to continue with the juvenile probation department. Barbara loved to travel; devoted husband, Frank, surprised her with cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and Mexico, along with trips to Maui, Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai. Eventually, England, Ireland, and Wales were added to their list.

In Barbara's memory, we wish to thank our amazing family and friends. Special sister, Alice Mangano, mom to Rosie, a bond of 42 years of loving togetherness. Barbara especially loved her San Luis Obispo friends: Don and lola Mae Anderson, Dale and Deanne Cotton, Bessie Rhyne, Leonard and Carol Schott, Phil and Mary Couchman, and those near home. Fondly remembered are Franz and Leslie Broz, with Mary Ann of Pebble Beach, Becky Mock, Torrance, mom of David and Jamie, Brother-in-law James J. Broz, Jr., niece Catherine, with husband Keith Dodson and grandchildren James and Elizabeth, and Christine Broz were loved. Also loved, nephew Lawrence Broz Ph.D., Rebecca Webb. Close

and loving Caires group with daughter Debra, and sons Nathanael, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Zechariah. Pat and Janice Reding, and daughter Kathleen, were well known, as was Al "Hit Alpha" and Ramona Torres. Nieces and nephews Jeffrey, Adrian, and Marina and Miranda Ph.D. Robert Perry Broz, Jimmy Broz, and Tekla Lapiano, mom to Noah, deceased, Lennon, Yanick and Misha. Great friends Linda and Frank Carbajal, Dawn Westergard, and Don and Judy Hopkins Trujillo. Susan Bonasera, mother to James, Eureka, and Jermaine remembered. Friends Carol and Dale Maibaum. All brought love and laughter into Barbara's life, which she openly returned time and time again. Barbara supported the US military and proudly watched loving husband Frank, a Korean War Navy radioman, later in the Navy Reserve, advance to the Command Master Chief of Treasure Island, Selected Reserve, commanded by RADM Lee Isaacson, wife Lenore. Barbara attended many gala military events at the Marines' Memorial, SF, and Chief's Clubs, SF Bay Area. Brother Robert Irwin, a Pearl Harbor Survivor, interested Frank in the Navy, assisted by Brothers Perry and Temple (both deceased), and James (Marine), all WWII vets.

Central Christian Church, San Jose, was vital to Barbara's life. She faithfully supported the Joy Ministry, various overseas missionaries, and adoringly watched Frank perform in the choir year-after-year.

Barbara, a kidney transplant recipient, October 1988, unceasingly supported the Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO) Bay Area TRIO Chapter. She began a Speakers Bureau, actively presenting transplantation awareness. Over the years she enjoyed many TRIO friends and activities. Thank you to her probation co-workers for donating thousands of dollars in vacation days to Barbara, upon her retirement.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Barbara's memory to: Bay Area TRIO (http://www.bayareatrio.org/ Barbara Broz Scholarship (to be set-up) in SJSU's Criminal Justice Department, for those majoring in Juvenile Probation.

Mom, we still miss you so much. Fathers' Day is just around the corner and, honestly, I'm going to miss spoiling Dad with you. So many memories made in the front rose garden of cold beer, fried chicken, and laughter. I miss you! Love, YSWMAD

Well, Barbara coming up on the second anniversary of your parting. Debra, Bob Irwin and I went to Pearl Harbor for Bob's 7 December 2013 Pearl Harbor Survivor ceremonies last week for three days. It was Debra's first time in Hawaii. She was overwelmed. Gave Debbie your rare tiny puka shell neckless and she cried. We all love and miss you. Frank Broz, husband

We wish we had had more years to get to know Barbara at the local chapter of Transplant Recipients International Organization but, unfortunately, her declining health began to keep her from our meetings not long after we became members. But we soon learned how much influence she had in maintaining a strong organization. We have benefitted greatly from its support, education and friendship, and for that we are deeply grateful to Barbara. That is her legacy to all transplant recipients and their families.

Dear Frank,
I have happy memories of stamping TRIO newsletters with Barbara at your kitchen table and of lunching with you and Barbara in Willow Glen. Barbara was uncommonly smart and fun to be with (and so are you). I admired the bond you shared for more than 50 years, and wish you comfort as you move forward. Memories are forever!

Dearest Uncle Frank,

I'm so sorry about the loss of your life long partner Barbara. She was a great lady and has touched the lives of many so her memory will always live on. This past Christmas my mom pointed out the SJ Sharks ornament she gave to me one Christmas close to 20 years ago, this ornament will always have a special place in my heart and on my tree.

I don't know when I first met you and Barabara but I'm sure I was very young so I've had the pleasure of growing up with her in my life.

She will be missed a lot. Please let me know if you need anything and when you are ready I've got some of Vernon's beer waiting for you.

Love Always,

Kathleen Reding

I first met Barbara at Vasona Skilled nursing Home,as her roomie in August, 2011. We quickly became special fiends, living side by side 24/7 for 34 days. We often could not sleep at nite so I would go to the kitchen and get us strawberry or chocolate ice cream. It was over these spoonfuls of ice cream, eaten in the dark, that we shared so much of ourselves with each other. You will never know what comes up in discussion, in a situation as we were in. I loved this couragous woman and her beloved Frank. I don't think I have ever known such an unconditional love as the love Barbara and Frank shared. My heartfelt sympathies go to Frank as he struggles during this sad time and forever. And to Barbara......Sleep now, my precious friend Barbara, you suffer no more.

I first met Aunt Barbara when I was a child, seeing and enjoying her love and humor at family gatherings. She and my Uncle Frank were always cheerful and kind to me and my children down through the years. I admired her courage in facing a transplant and her unfailing good will and support to others. My heart is with Uncle Frank in this dark time of losing her. She will be sorely missed.

We have known Barbara since 1948 when we were friends at church and High School in San Luis Obispo. We have 63 years of "Barbara Memories" that included many good times of fun and laughter. Especially remembered were the daily walks to school with Barbara, Cookie, Joyce and Dorothy. She was a good friend and will be missed.

When I was hired as a probation officer, in 1979, after working for six years at the Ranch, Barbara was one of the few that was willing to help me gain the knowledge needed to succeed. She was a true mentor, and I will always remember her with fondness and great respect.
