Barbara Filippi Nunes
September 26, 1941 - September 17, 2021
Resident of Cupertino
Barbara Filippi Nunes was taken from her family, Niece Jennifer Parker, Nephew Michael Filippi, stepson Bob Nunes and Goddaughter Susan Rocha all too soon.
As a California native she attended local schools and then San Jose State University for her BA and Master's Degrees. In 1963 she started her teaching career and in 1964 moved to the Fremont Union High School District mostly at Cupertino High School and there she stayed until 2000, serving as teacher, department chair, Coordinator of Curriculum and finally as Principal of Cupertino High.
Upon her retirement she was called to return to service with the Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and to the FUHSD Board of Trustees for 16 years. She and her retired teaching partner also served the City of Cupertino as the teaching faculty for Tomorrows Leaders Today.
Barbara built a family while Principal at Cupertino, where she encouraged graduates to return to teach and "pay it forward" for the young people in the community. Their enthusiastic responses and her leadership earned the school California Distinguished School awards and a National Blue Ribbon School award.
That's what Barbara was all about, family. All who worked for her received the benefit of her knowledge and felt her support, and risk taking was encouraged if it helped the students. She found time to "coach" the newbies and provide support the older staff that needed guidance or maybe just a "little shove in the right direction".
Barbara loved to travel and year after year she went with Gail and Howard Jensen to Ashland and on Tauck Tours around this wonderful land of ours. She always found time for her fellow Quotarians and epitomized the Quota goals of service and support.
ALS took her by surprise, for she had never been sick a day in her life, but she met life squarely and reminded her friends that when all else failed she could still move her middle digit when discussing her illness. She will be sorely missed, but somewhere in heaven there is a new job for an angel who wants to get on with the work.
Service will be held at the Lima Family Mortuary, 466 N. Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara on October 5th at 10:30 A.M. with interment to follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery 490 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara. Masks are required. Any expressions of sympathy can be in flowers or to Barbara's favorite charity Quota International of Cupertino P.O Box 2957 Cupertino, CA 95015-2957.
