Berba Proffitt passed away February 26 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Berba lived the vast majority of her life in Burlingame. She was a graduate of Burlingame High school and Mills College in Oakland. Berba was a member of both San Mateo County and Omaha chapters of P.E.O. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Burlingame and could often be found cheerfully participating in services singing with the choir. An optimistic, charming and gracious woman, Berba could always be found with a ready smile and an encouraging word for all. Berba was always down for the party. She enjoyed a stiff cocktail and a good laugh. For several years running, she presided as the Gran Dam over the Disorderly House Party in Logan Utah managing to avoid arrest throughout her tenure. No one on the planet enjoyed having lunch at the Copenhagen on the "Avenue" more than Berba.

Berba was happily married to Buel G. Proffitt, was a loving mother of six children: Nancy Noller (Doug), Jamie (Kathleen), Tom (Diane), Susan Astrove (Skip), Buel (Trish) and Todd, and a grandmother to seven and great grandmother to three. She taught all the importance of compassion for others, a love for good music, movies, and reading, and never to pass up the opportunity to help your neighbor. She also was ahead of her time in encouraging her children to eat healthy, providing whole wheat bread and fruit smoothies in place of the era's Hostess cupcakes and Wonder Bread.

She is survived by all of her children and grandchildren, who will miss her smiles and optimism. She is preceded in death by her husband, Buel G. Proffitt and parents Myrtle and Carleton Bessett.
