My condolences to the Edwards family. From 1986 to mid-1990, I was in frequent touch with Don while covering the California delegation for the Mercury News. Congressman Edwards was a keen, straightforward observer of both policy and people. His warm sense of humor eased any number of our conversations.

Don Edwards was a great and gentle warrior for justice. He was uncompromising on fundamental principles and flexible and pragmatic in service of those principles.

It was an honor to be in his presence.

He was a voice of opposition to capital punishment for many years. We will soon see the fruits of his labors there too.

Don Edwards was a remarkable person.
He was one of four Congressmen who was against the Vietnam War when I served in his Washington DC office as a college intern the summer of 1963. He was unique, courageous, intelligent, and compassionate. Our democracy works when people find common ground, and truly share a passion for equal rights and justice for all.

I had the honor of being on Don Edwards' congressional staff from 1982- 1986. To work for a man known for his kindness, integrity, and ability to work with people across the aisle was truly a privilege and a joy. Never have I had a kinder boss or one who I respected as much. I am fortunate to be able to say that I once worked for a political with integrity. He has left his mark in so many ways. A remarkable man.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Edwards family. We thank you for sharing this great man with so many of us. He has left a legacy of ethics, acceptance of all people and love of country. I was a recent college graduate when I phoned his office while in D.C. to see if I could get a ticket for a White House tour. His staff displayed the professionalism and kindness that only s strong leader would exhibit to his employees. Following my request and later that same day Rep. Edwards phoned me to tell me I could see the White House the very next day. He was extremely kind and wished me much success in my future endeavors. He became my role model. Again , thank you Edwards' family for sharing him with so many of us for so many years!

My mama and daddy told me they knew you a long time. Mama even said you dated her and introduced her to my daddy. They both lived into their 80's, but not as long as you did. I wish I could have met you because they always spoke highly of you. RIP Don...

Rep. Edwards was an inspiration to me and my parents when we lived in Fremont, near the district office on Paseo Padre Parkway. I am so grateful for his service, and his legacy, especially the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge, and support for civil liberties.

My sincere condolences to the family. It is truly a blessing Don lived a long life because so many people will never see his age. It reminds me of Psalms 90:10 which tells us how our life span is 70 years or 80. Cherish his memories forever in your heart.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Don Edwards, but my Mother, Evie Avila had long known him, having worked with him at Abstact and Title and later at Valley Title Company. She spoke very highly of Don through the years. I presume their shared passion for progressive politics and women's rights was the spark in their friendship.

He certainly lived an interesting life achieving many great things for the greater good. Thank you Mr. Edwards!

My condolences to his family.
