Edmund Richmond Obituary

Edmund N. Richmond II
September 20, 1928-September 6, 2016
Long Time Resident of San Jose
Edmund ("Ned") Nutting Richmond II was born in San Jose, California on September 20, 1928 to his parents, Helen Curtner Richmond and Burnell Edmund Richmond, and was a long time resident of San Jose. He graduated from Lincoln High School, and later received his Business Degree from Claremont Men's College in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii and served during the Korean War. He was an officer on the Coast Guard Cutter, USS Winnebago. In 1956, Ned married Evelyn Herz and settled in Saratoga, California where they had two children, Gregory Burnell in 1957 and DeEtte Elisabeth in 1962.
Following his service in the Coast Guard, Ned joined the Richmond-Chase Company, founded by his grandfather, E. N. Richmond, as a Vice President of Marketing and Sales. Richmond Chase was later sold to California Canners and Growers, and Ned continued to work there for another few years. Before starting his next career, Ned and Evie took their two young children on a year-long trip to Europe and North Africa. Upon their return, Ned embarked on a career in real estate and investments, which later included managing the family's cattle ranch (Richmond Ranch) in the Evergreen Hills of San Jose.
Through his grandmother, Edna Beard Curtner, Ned Richmond was a descendant of Thomas Kennan Beard, who founded Beard Land & Improvement Company in Modesto, California. BL&I also included subsidiaries Del Este Water Company and the M&ET short line railroad. Ned was a Director of all three companies from 1979 to 2000. He was also very active in the greater San Jose community, serving on the Boards of Silver Creek Country Club and the History Museum of San Jose. He had also been a member of the University Club, the Silicon Valley Capital Club, the Tahoe Yacht Club, and Gaeties among others.
First and foremost, Ned was a family man. He enjoyed spending much of his time with his children, grandchildren and relatives. In his youth, Ned was an avid sailor, racing in San Francisco Bay, and later owning and enjoying classic wooden boats on Lake Tahoe. He was a great student of history and archaeology; he enjoyed collecting classic cars and wooden boats, serving as a Judge for the Lake Tahoe Concourse de Elegance Boat Show. Ned was equally fond of classical music, opera and literature.
Ned passed away peacefully on September 6 after a long illness and leaves behind his devoted wife of 60 years, Evelyn. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Joan Naess and brother Robert Richmond. He is survived by his son, Gregory Burnell Richmond (Marisa) and daughter DeEtte Richmond Sipos (Richard), four grandchildren: Aldyn Elizabeth Richmond, Tyler Gregory Richmond (Chelsey), Natalie Marie Sipos and Trevor Richmond Sipos, and his sister-in-law, I. Elizabeth Richmond.
A service will be held at Darling-Fischer Garden Chapel at 471 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. Lunch reception to follow.

I remember "Uncle Ned" as a nice guy, smart as a whip, and he loved his old cars!

As a friend of DeEtte's in high school I have great memories of Ned ... always smiling, funny, gracious, warm and welcoming. I am grateful for the wisdom he and Evie often shared, and my thoughts are with the whole family through this sad time. -- Robin Wortley Hammond

I have fond memories of Ned, a great man...starting with our many visits and conversations about the canneries in Campbell and Santa Clara Valley to the time he served on the board of History San Jose where I am currently employed. My deepest sympathy and caring thoughts to Evie and family.
