Gerald Hubert Pitts
Resident of Albany, Oregon
Gerald Hubert Pitts, Jerry, 84, passed away peacefully, August 8th 2015. Jerry, son of Cecil and Fanny Fern (Frady) Pitts, loving husband of Wanna Dene (Miller) Pitts, is survived by Wanna, a son Steve, a daughter Patsy, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A journeyman machinist and millwright, Jerry built and maintained "mills" of many types, from sawmills to large construction operations to vineyards.
Jerry enjoyed travel, water-skiing, snow-skiing, camping, and Elk hunting with old friends. He enjoyed photography, water color painting, and feeding people. He supported Wanna in her teaching career by fabricating tools for her research, by producing over 10,000 slides for her lecture presentations, and by "leading from the rear", accompanying Wanna through 20 years of Field Studies in Natural History, providing "whatever it took" to make the Field Studies succeed. Jerry always kept the "Mill Right".
Jerry was a dancer. He and Wanna square danced every week for many years. They enjoyed ballroom dancing and "cut a rug" on many an occasion. Whether a tango, a polka, or waltzing through bureaucratic red tape, Jerry could dance.
Jerry intuitively recognized that the older man is obliged to help, encourage, and admire the younger man. He expressed this duty with young relatives and in-laws, and sons of friends, sharing his knowledge, helping them find work and succeed in it, and giving useful criticism when he thought it was needed. He was a good man.
Memorial services will be held on November 14, 2015, at 11 AM, at CUMC, 777 Miramontes Street, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019. Memorial services will also be held in July, 2016, in Ashland, OR, during the annual high school reunion there. The family requests that remembrances be in the form of donations to Coastside Hope, POB 1089, El Granada, CA 94018.
