Jake Hulsey Obituary

HULSEY, Jake Colias Jacob "Jake" Hulsey, 93, of Dunwoody, Georgia formerly of Avondale Estates, Georgia and Duluth, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 26th. Jake was born June 12, 1921 in Bayleton Alabama to John Seth and Marine Hulsey. He attended High School in Starkville, Mississippi. After graduating from Mississippi State University and obtaining a Master Degree in agronomy from the University of Missouri, Jake was invited to develop and implement a "Good Seed Program" for the State of Georgia to comply with a 1944 Georgia law enacted to regulate the quality of seed sold in the state. In 1951 Jake founded his own seed testing lab, Hulsey Seed Lab, with little idea that in 2011 he would celebrate 60 years of service. Jake, a Registered Seed Technologist, was a member of the Georgia Seed Association, the Southern Seedmen's Association, the Western Seedmen's Association and the American Seed Trade Association. He received the Distinguished Service award from the Georgia Seed Association and was made an Honorary Member for his outstanding contributions to the agriculture and seed industry. The Georgia Crop Improvement Association awarded him the Outstanding Service award. When arriving in Atlanta in 1944, Jake set out to find a place to live. As was customary in the war years he called on a boarding house for housing. A beautiful young brunette princess opened the door greeting Jake with a charming and welcoming smile. After several months of courtship, he proposed to the most beautiful girl in the world, Roberta Boswell. They were married November 21, 1945 and celebrated 68 years of marriage. While residing in Avondale Estates, Jake and his family enjoyed fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon. After moving to Duluth, Jake and Roberta attended Norcross Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and assisted with beautification of the grounds. Jake and Roberta were avid golfers. He and Roberta spent many happy Sunday afternoons playing in couples events at the Atlanta Athletic Club where Jake was an emeritus Heisman member. He also enjoyed boating at the AAC Yacht Club for many years. Jake was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Thelma Reed, niece Betty Ann Graham and great nephew Bobby Hulsey. Jake is survived by his wife, Roberta; children, Patricia Bridges (Al), Jerry Hulsey (Debi), Jan Daniels (Jim); brother, John Seth (Sonny) Hulsey (Lucille); grandchildren, Tripp Bridges (Ramsey), Trey Daniels, Haley Daniels, Holley Jaakkola (Juha), Brooke Odom (Louette); great grandchildren, Berdie and Ford Bridges, Ava and Sophie Jaakkola and Georgia Odom; niece Selah Zweig (Dennis) and nephews John Reed (Tana), Vincent Hulsey (Sharron) and David Hulsey (Carol); great nieces Bree Lorenzo, Jenna Zweig and Katarina Hulsey; great nephews Brandon Reed and Justin Reed; great great nieces Noah Grace and Elis Lorenzo. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the chapel at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church 1978 Mount Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338 on Saturday September 6th at 4p.m. The family is asking that In lieu of flowers; please make a donation to St. Luke's Presbyterian Church. I just found out today (10-24-14) of Jake's passing. I have been out of the seed business for some 15 years, now. However, back in 1963, when I started Dickey Seed Company, we started sending all of our seed samples to Hulsey for germ and purity testing. We continued using the Hulsey Seed Lab for 37 years at which time we discontinued our seed production business.

Many folks may not know this, but the whole agricultural system, and the subsequent feeding of the world, relies on the planting of good seed. Jake's job was to find out, and officially approve, a seed's quality (germination and vigor) before it was to be planted in the field. Thousands of seedsmen and farmers depended on the integrity of the seed analyst, and you knew that when those seed had been tested by Hulsey that they were right.

Jake Hulsey's integrity was beyond reproach, and many will agree that he was a giant in the seed and agricultural world. Jake's gone now, but many, many, many people, who set down at the dinning table to a good and wholesome meal have, and are, benefiting, thanks to Jake Hulsey.
