Mother of Robert Balcom, Karen (Balcom) Hokanson, Kristen (Balcom) Tarabetz of San Jose, CA, and Sharon (Balcom) Curliss of Suffolk, VA. Grandmother of R. Lance Balcom, Kathryn Hokanson, Karina Hokanson, Sonora Curliss, Donald Curliss, Kimberly Curliss, Brandy Falcon, Nicole Tavey and Great-grandmother to Robbie Tavey. A native of San Francisco, she was a Santa Clara County resident since 1957. 81 years young, she was a passionate advocate for PTA, Literacy, children and education. Army Veteran, she rose to the rank of Sergeant. Graduate of San Jose State College with her degree in Occupational Therapy.Memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM, Sunday, October 29, 2006 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 121 S. White Rd., San Jose, CA 95127. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gloria Dei Lord's Pantry at the same address. I worked with Joan for many years
while at Linda Vista School, she was an avid PTA advocate at that school and did a WONDERFUL job always! Loved her smile and sense of humor, truly a great lady who will be missed always.
