John Joseph Mardesich
April 22, 1935 - July 3, 2021
Resident of Cupertino
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Joseph Mardesich on July 3, 2021, beloved husband of Jolene, loving father to sons, John, Joe (Jeanette) and Rick (Camila) and grandfather to 10 grandchildren. John felt blessed to have a large loving family and he always put family first. John is fondly remembered by his brother Joe (Carol), sister in law Barbara (late brother Nick), brother in law Alex (Lynn), sister in law Suzette (Bob), nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many good friends.
John was born April 22, 1935 in San Pedro, CA and was the second son of John and Margaret Mardesich. In 1938, when John was 3 years old, John and Margaret bought their first five-acre apricot orchard and moved to Cupertino. The family later added cherry and prune orchards. John attended local schools Cupertino Union Grammar School, Fremont High School, and San Jose State College. Growing up, John along with his two brothers all helped their parents working in the orchards, irrigating, pruning, picking and cutting apricots.
Shortly after graduating college, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. St. Paul with his brother Nick. John often visited San Pedro relatives while stationed in Long Beach and San Diego. While on leave John met Jolene of San Pedro, CA on a blind date set up by his San Pedro cousins. John and Jolene were married on August 9, 1958.
In the early 1960's, in partnership with his brothers Nick and Joe, Mardesich Company was formed to own and operate commercial real estate properties. In addition, John was a salesman for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 28 years before retiring in 1985. John loved going to the racetrack, and along with his brother Joe, he owned and bred thoroughbred racehorses.
John and Jolene made sure that their children knew their Yugoslav heritage and took them to the town of Komiza, on the island of Vis to meet their grandfather's brother, sister and extended families. John and Jolene later travelled again to Komiza many times with their San Pedro cousins.
The family would like to thank all of the health care professionals at Atria Sunnyvale for their great care in the last several months of John's life. Donations may be sent to Atria Senior Living, 175 East Remington Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 or a charity of your choice
