Sadly, we announce the passing of Laureen Bernhardt at the age of 86 after a determined, courageous and inspiring 50 plus-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. A native of
Chicago, Illinois, Laureen moved to California at a young age, attending Hester Elementary, Herbert Hoover Junior High and Abraham Lincoln High School. Laureen was very proud to have graduated from San Jose State University with her degree in Business Management. Laureen is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Edward L. Bernhardt in 2015. She will continue being an inspiration forever to her Children: Beverly Freitas (Mike), Brian Bernhardt (Judy), Betty Ascensao; Grandchildren: Samantha Rondone, Sarah Rondone, Todd Freitas, Daniel Ascensao and Eric Freitas, along with extended family and many dear friends.Laureen was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, surrogate mother and lifelong friend to many. Those who spent time with Laureen will remember her intellectual curiosity, friendly nature and love of family. She had many diverse interests and skills throughout her life: she had a soft spot for cats, enjoyed puzzles, Scrabble games, roller coasters, was a voracious reader, and was proud of having sewn her daughter's prom dresses. Laureen had a love of Musical Theater, having attended many shows throughout her lifetime and was also a huge 49'er fan, proud of having had season tickets when they played at Candlestick Park. She was also delighted to have both downhill skied and water skied and enjoyed doing both activities with her family. Laureen and Ed went on 2 cruises to Alaska and bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Laureen took on the challenge of Multiple Sclerosis with a positive attitude and never gave up. Laureen lived a full life in the face of a cruel, and incurable disease and will be remembered for her friendly nature, sense of humor, intellect and most of all courage. She leaves a wonderful legacy with the countless lives she touched. Arrangements have been made via The Neptune Society and a private, family service has already been held. The family encourages donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society
