Lois Houghton Obituary

HOUGHTON, Lois Evelyn (Hoagland) -- passed away peacefully from lung cancer, with her family at her side, on February 26, 2003. She was 90 years old. Lois was born in Melbeta, Nebraska on January 30, 1913. Her family moved to Walla Walla, Washington, when she was five years old. After completing high school in Walla Walla, she attended college in Bellingham, Washington and received her teaching credential from the University of Washington. She taught the primary grades for eight years before marrying Willard G. Houghton in 1938 and moving to San Francisco, where both of their children were born. The Houghtons spent most of their life in the Bay Area, residing in San Carlos, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park. Lois served as president of the Palo Alto Women's Club and was active in volunteer work. She particularly enjoyed working with children and young adults. The Houghtons moved to San Diego County in 2000 to be near their daughter. Lois' husband Willard and son David Ralph Houghton preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Lynn Pearson of Carlsbad; five grandchildren, David N. Houghton of Tiburon, CA, Michael S. Houghton of San Francisco, CA, Patrick W. Houghton of Woodland Hills, CA, Karen E. Kirshon of Tustin, CA and Christopher J. Pearson of Loveland, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren. Her ashes have been interred next to her husband's at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Oceanside, CA. No public services are planned.
