Marjorie Garfield Obituary

Marjorie Saul Garfield, PhD. Age 90 of Palo Alto passed away quickly and peacefully in Redwood City on September 19. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 10, 1919 to Miriam and Morris Saul. Marge was a retired Clinical Psychologist, who helped to develop innovative treatment programs for the chronically mentally ill at Haverford State Hospital in Haverford, Pennsylvania. She retired at age 79 when the state hospital was closed. At that time she moved to the Bay Area to be close to her two daughters. Marjorie wasted no time in getting involved in local charities. She joined Kiwanis and became a member of the Board of Directors of the Menlo Park Kiwanis; she joined the Peninsula Volunteers and was later elected to its Board of Directors as well. She served as editor of the Live Oak newsletter, which she published from her computer for two years, teaching herself to use publishing software at the age of 85. She was a member of Congregation Beth Am and served on the Women's Board of Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos. Marge loved classical music and live theater. She was an active politically progressive advocate of civil rights for all groups. Her positive attitude and subtle sense of humor entertained and motivated those around her. Marge is survived by her sister Louisa Rosenthal; three children, Lynda Malavanya, Steven Garfield and Wendy Burger; her children-in-law, Fred Zlotnick, Elaine Garfield and Rudy Burger; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was buried in a private family service on Tuesday, September 22nd at Skylawn Memorial Park with Rabbi Janet Marder officiating. A public memorial 'celebration of life' will take place at Little House Activity Center, 800 Middle Avenue, Menlo Park on Wednesday, October 28th at 2 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Peninsula Volunteers Endowment Fund, 800 Middle Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025.
