Maurice S. Young

March 25, 2013
Resident of Belmont
Maurice died peacefully in Belmont, CA after complications from a stroke. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by many family and friends. Maurice was born in Summerfield, KS to Rose (Mitchell) and George Young. After graduating from high school Dad was drafted into the US Army and served during WWII. After returning from the War, Dad and his friend, Louis Mandeville drove the historic Route 66 to California, and he eventually relocated to Westwood, CA with his mother, brothers George, Ed & Raymond, and sister Marie, and worked for Collin's Pine. He worked for the Forest Service in Juneau, AK for a summer, and then returned to the Bay Area and attended Healds College. After completing his studies, he took a job with Eimac, which later became Varian Associates, first in San Carlos, and later in Palo Alto. Maurice worked at Varian Associates for over 40 years.
Maurcie and his wife, Marian, loved to travel and saw much of the world over many years including Europe and the Panama Canal. Maurice loved cars, especially old ones. He often couldn't tell you what he ate for dinner yesterday, but could tell you what car he or his brothers were working on or driving 60 years ago. He loved fishing, even if the fish weren't biting, and would jump at the chance to go with friends or his grandkids. He deeply loved Kansas and the farm he grew up on, as well as the beauty of nature everywhere. He loved Marian's cooking more than anything he could ever get at a restaurant. He and Marian both loved dancing, and many types of music, especially Bluegrass and American folk music. They danced together for many years.
Maurice is survived by his travel companion, dance partner, and loving wife of 49 years, Marian Young, daughters Mary Sutherland (Kevin) of Sacramento, CA, and Susan Tweet (Rod), of Santa Fe, NM; grandchildren Kyle, Keaton, and Sarabrianka; brother Ed Young, of Westwood, and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins all over the West.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Wed., April 3, 10 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1040 Alameda de las Pulgas in Belmont.
