Pete Wilson
KGO-TV, ABC7 anchor Pete Wilson died Friday night at Stanford Hospital from a massive heart attack suffered during hip replacement surgery, the station reported today on its Web site. Wilson, 62, is survived by his wife, Sandra and son Brendan.

"Pete was one of the most valued and respected news professionals in the Bay Area and the country," ABC7 President and General Manager Valari Staab said in a statement. "For more than 30 years, he was welcomed into the homes of thousands of local viewers reporting on every major news event that touched their lives. This is a deep loss."

Wilson had co-anchored the station's 6 p.m. newscast since 2002. Before that he spent 12 years anchoring the news at KRON-TV in San Francisco.

The station said Wilson, born and raised in central Wisconsin, was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin in journalism and creative writing.

The station noted that Wilson has received numerous awards from the Associated Press and others, and a half-dozen Emmy's.

Wilson also shared two Peabody awards, including one for his coverage of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake while at ABC7, the station said.

In recent days, I was looking online at different websites related to the San Francisco Bay Area in order to help myself remember more in detail of the great experience I had in the Bay Area during the late 90’s. Sadly, today I came across the stories related to the death of KGO-TV personality Pete Wilson. Pete Wilson was one of a small handful of people on television and on radio (in my opinion) that demonstrated a high level of knowledge and common sense in this field. I remember Pete Wilson more from his days at KRON ( former NBC Affiliate) during the 5,6, and 11 pm newscasts where I enjoyed his “ In the Circular File” segment the most. What made Pete Wilson a stand out more in my eyes was his ability to present the news and his views not on the basis of any given political slant but on the basis of right and wrong. What hits me the most about Pete’s death was the timing of since a few days after, 4 others in the news business had passed away on July 27th in my current home in the Great state of Arizona. Pete’s Passing had the same emotional effect on me today as I did when I saw the videos and pictures of 2 TV News Helicopters (KNXV ABC 15 and KTVK 3TV) in Phoenix . What all of these men had had in common was not only the experience of the news business but all of them where hard working individuals who never took life for granted. Scott Bowerbank, Craig Smith, Jim Cox, Rick Krolak, and Pete Wilson will never be forgotten and their deaths should serve to all of us as a reminder that our lives will come to pass as well and to make the best of the short time all of us have on Earth. My condolences to the families, friends, and co-workers of these 5 gentlemen. May they all rest in peace for all of them are now in a better place.

Pete never sold out to any side and always carefully analyzed his options before making an informed choice on anything. No party line forever right or wrong, no lunatic fringe slant.... just common sense centered and balanced perspective every day in every way due to his practical and sensible midwestern roots of which he was proud and thankful. Pete was a true pro who dared to show us his actual self on the a result he came across as a real person in a field full of pompous and self-rightous phonies. I will miss him.

Pete, I only met you in person once (at the Hyatt in SF) but I was always in your corner on both radio and tv. You were ALWAYS a voice of reason and common sense, when common sense is a not-too-common quality. You took the middle road 90% of the time, never failing to speak your mind, and show kindness to callers. I knew we were both the same age and I felt a kinship. I know in my heart you have gone to a better place. My prayers to both your dear wife and son.

Pete, You have been my main sail for years on the radio. Almost every day you were that particular clear unwaivering voice of reason. Now that you're gone, Common Sense is also non-existent on radio. You were THE middle of the road, logical, common sense, non-poltical broadcaster, and a "family member" via radio to me. I am so very sad and empty now that we won't have you as our moral rudder any longer. You made me smile and think! May God hold you tightly in His loving arms. You are sorely missed my friend. There will never ever be anyone who can fill your shoes, sadly.

Like most everyone else, after turning on the radio Saturday morning and hearing talk of Pete in the past tense, I was riveted with chills all over. Pete was the Newcaster of choice in my growing years in the San Jose area on channel 7 and 4 (and 5 a long time ago?), and then as a talk-show host more recently at KGO.

When I first heard him on KGO radio I wondered how a newscaster could pan out as a good talk radio show host. My wonders were quashed by his performance, after his initial "break-in period" that he so often acknowledged through his 5 years on KGO radio. Did he ever really "break-in"?

Though my job only allows occasional listening to him on my way home, I still looked forward to hearing him for those two hours because I knew I would get quality time from him.

Prayers and best wishes to his entire family, friends and co-workers. This is an undescribingly sad day for the Bay Area.

Pete was an honest, passionate and acute journalist. I welcomed him almost everyday at work and at home. When I tuned on to KGO and heard his voice I often felt a sense of relief and familiarity knowing that I would have a few hours of stimulating and intelligent conversation coming my way.
I was truly stunned when I got the news of his death as was everyone in my family. Rest in peace, you'll be missed.

I grew up watching and listening to Pete. I was so stunned and saddened to learn of his passing. We all felt like we knew him. He had a voice that kept you calm (especially during those Loma Prieta aftershocks!). You could always count on him to give you the facts and details that we all needed to know just to get through the day. Well, here's a fact...he was a great man with a tremendous heart...and he will be sorely missed. God bless you, Pete. My deepest condolences to the Wilson family, his friends and colleagues, and to the entire Bay Area.

Hi Pete,
I'll miss your voice at 2.05pm everyday at work. You were such a great person and a great but humble talk show host. I don't know why God like to take good people home early, but i want to thank him for letting me hear your voice for many years and come to like you as a friend, a family member even though i'd never met you.
Rest in peace Pete.

Dear Wilson Family and KGO Family,

Thank you so very much for that wonderful tribute that was given on KGO about Pete. It did somewhat help with the saddness that we were feeling for the loss of someone so dear to our hearts. To think that we will not be hearing his voice or seeing his face is hard to imagine.

What a terrible loss we have all suffered.

With deepest sympathy,

I was the Production Manager at KTXL-TV in Sacramento when Pete came to this area. I directed his News broadcast many times and have many fond memories of one of the most professional broadcasters I ever worked with in my 40 year career in television. I even had the pleasure to attend his wedding in Old Sacramento. At 65 I'm now retired but remember all the great times we had working together. My deepest sympathy to the family and God Bless and give you peace.

I have watched Pete since he was a news anchor on our local channels on TV (KRON & KGO) and enjoyed his comments and conversation very much on KGO radio every afternoon from 2 PM to 4 PM. I didn't understand why people were talking about how it was working with Pete as a news anchor on Monday's (daytime) program with Gene Burns -- I had no idea Pete had died the Friday before. It was/is unbelievable. To see that lifeforce gone out.... He was a professed Democrat but he was so reasonable if someone said something stupid about the President (even though Pete really didn't like him much), Pete was the first one to jump down that person's throat to say it wasn't true and what a stupid comment -- he called the kettle black and if it wasn't - he fought tooth and nail to tell everyone that as well. Regardless of what some might have thought because of a certain topic he got into trouble with, Pete believed in equality and rights for all - regardless of race, religion or sexual preference. I am glad to have "known" him and am very sad to see him go.

I grew up in the Bay Area and have watched/heard Pete Wilson for years. He was such a gifted man! By all accounts from friends and colleagues he was very nice, genuinely decent man, who cared about his community, was a wonderful father and husband. It is a rare find to have someone in the public eye, as smart and witty as Pete Wilson was, who kept his ego in check and was simply a good soul. My prayers are with his family during this very difficult time. May he rest in peace

He was one of the few news persons that I actually liked and respected. I felt that he was walking the walk between doing his job and keeping his integrity. Did not realize he was 6'5". Wow! Liked the way he had this look of incredulity at some of the reports he made, and at times while listening to reports from other news persons. Actually I haven't felt this sense of loss at a news person's passing since Herb Caen passed.

My condolences to his family.

July 23, 2007
I feel like I've lost part of my family. Pete was a genuine gentleman and a voice of reason. He allowed his callers to express their opinion and wasn't rude with them because they didn't agree with him. He could separate facts from fiction and didn't put the blame of everything negative that happened on a person just because he didn't care for him. He would only blame him for the things that were known facts and that's it.I admired him and felt very comfortable calling into his program. He has been my favorite host since the day he started and I can't imagine anyone being able to take his place and be as fair and honest as he was. I'd like to express my sympathy to his family and his KGO family. I will truly miss him and mourn his passing.

Pete was the voice of calm when our world was rocked during the Loma Prieta earthquake on Oct 17. Being new to the Bay area and CA and earthquakes, his on air presence made it seem like we were all going to be okay and we were.

I just can't believe it! I was listening to Pete talk about his upcoming surgery on KGO last Wednesday, while coming home from my own doctor's diagnosis of a hip degeneration. It was obvious from the calls he received that they were trying to calm his fears, a tribute to how much people cared about him. Pete was always very level-headed and fair on his broadcasts, something that made him comfortable to listen to, like you were chatting with a good friend. My sympathies to his wife, Sandra, and his son, Brendon. What a loss.

I was devastated to hear of the tragic loss of Pete Wilson. He was my favorite news anchor and I never watched anyone else during my 13 1/2 yrs. in the Bay Area. He was down to earth, funny, and added such personality to his unbiased reporting. Since we've been having a lot of flooding the past few weeks, I have been recalling Pete's antics during one of the El Nino years-----when the camera returned to him after another wet forecast, he was waving a white flag with the typical Pete Wilson expression. He was one of a kind and will be missed. My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his family.

First my condolenses to Petes family on their loss & ours as well. When I moved to the Bay from So. 1980 and I first saw Pete & listened to him ,I noticed that there was something in his voice & his style that made me feel comfortable. As if he were a personal friend .I enjoyed his wit & cleverness, and when he spoke on major issues it really made you think . When he moved to KRON I did as well, My eyes teared as well as my wifes when we heard the tragic news on late Sunday night.I feel a large hole in my chest , I have been a member of Couples for Christ ( a Catholic Organization since 96. I listened to Pete's last show on Wednesday; talking about his eagerness to get back on the golf course after his operation. He was a great broadcaster and Bay Area Radio/TV has truly lost one of the last great ones. KGO won't be the same without him.

Our deepest sympathy to Pete's wife and son. We have lost a treasured friend, an honorable man, a delightful human being - God bless him.

We were just simply shocked to hear of Pete leaving us so suddenly. We grew up watching him and feel like we have known him for years. God be with his family and confort them as he himself comforted so many of us during difficult times. He will be so missed.

Pete was real. He was opinionated, but not political. I've grown up with him over the last thirty years. I learned to trust him and always found his ideas well thought out, whether I agreed with him or not. There is no one else in media, locally or nationally, that was as personable as he. I will miss him.
