Sgt. Radetich was born in San Francisco on August 14, 1938 to Rose Mary and Benjamin Radetich. He graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City in 1956 and later received an Associate Arts degree from Canada College in 1970. He embarked on his career in law enforcement in 1956 as a Security Police Officer in the United States Air force. His craft and law enforcement skills developed while engaged in many high-profile base policing duties which included moving and securing atomic weapons and aircraft as well as transporting military prisoners from various nationwide stockades to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He received several military commendations including the Good Conduct Medal of Honor. After successfully completing four years of service, Ron was honorably discharged in 1960. Ron continued his service in law enforcement by joining the San Mateo County Sheriff's office in 1961.
Sgt. Radetich was the first sworn employee to successfully complete over forty years of continuous service, which exemplified his dedication and commitment as a public servant. He earned the Bronze Medal of Distinguished Service, eight Gold Service Stars, and was honored with the "Peace Officer of the Year Award" in 2001, the year he retired from the San Mateo County Sheriff's office. After retirement, Ron continued to consult for government and corporate agencies, small businesses, and numerous private clients as founder of Blackhawk Security Consultants in Danville.
Ron is survived by his two sons, Curt (Kelly) Radetich and Todd (Helen) Radetich, three grandchildren; Jacob, Ben, and Ana, his brother; Bruce (Nancy) Radetich, his cousin, JoEllen Radetich, his nephew and godson, Jeff Radetich, his nieces; Sarah Richardson and Jocelyn Golde, and countless friends who will miss his presence and remember him for his willingness and dedication to helping those in need.

I met Ron back in 2004 in San Ramon. He was my next door neighbor but also became a friend. I enjoyed our chats that we had and we always looked out for each's others homes and the community. I moved back in 2012 but had the pleasure of meeting him for dinner about 2 years ago. My tenant in the same community, notified me of Ron's passing. He spoke highly of his family and adored his grandchildren. My deepest condolences and sympathies are with his friends and family during these times.

What can I say about the Rat. He was one of a kind & there will never be a person like the Rat ever again. I worked for Rat when I first went up to the bureau, in fact he was the person who gave me the gold badge that say's Detective. He was a great great person. I did not know he was not feeling well a couple of years ago, but he apparently beat the medical problem but only for a short time. My heart & prayers go out to the family for their loss. We always sent emails to one another. My apologies for not attending his service, but I was not aware of them until it was too late. I personally will miss him.

I just learned of Ron's transitioned. He was a dedicated worker, father, grandfather and friend. I will miss his sense of humor and the many stories we shared about his family and work. He was always there when you needed him as a professional and friend. May God be with you during these difficult moments and rest assured that Ron will always be with us.

I worked with Ron back in the 1960's and he was a great guy and partner.

R.I.P. Ron, you will be missed.

Thanks, Ron. It was greatly appreciated.

I had the pleasure of working with Ron as a Deputy under his supervision, a Sergeant working side-by-side with him, and a Lieutenant where he was one of my Sergeants. To say Ron was unique would be an understatement. I remember talking with him just before I retired and asked him why he continued to work when he was well into the age to leave. He just simply said, "Lou, I love this job and will stay on as long as I can". In that regard, he was one of the few sworn staff I ever knew over the years that felt that way.
While others nearing retirement were glad to be leaving, and made no qualms about telling you so, Ron was always upbeat about the job. He didn't care about the politics or the gossip or the things we look back on as every so important at the time, yet now seem trivial in the long run. He just loved being a police officer and was sincere in that feeling. And that's something a lot of veteran cops cannot claim.

When it was his day to work, he would always stop by my office just to ask how everything was going and shoot the bull. Just before I left the department he came in one day and said, Lou, I hate to see you go, I've always enjoyed working with you, so, here's a little something I picked up for your retirement. He then gave me a San Mateo County Sheriff's Office baseball cap with, L-1 on it. To this day I still have his cap on a shelf with my other law enforcement collections and consider it the most thoughtful and appreciated gift I received.

RIP Ronyou were a good man.

Experience teaches us many things, yet no amount of experience prepares anyone for loss of those who have touched our lives. While there are few words to take away the feeling of loss that you feel, we hope that you are comforted by warm memories that last a lifetime. Ron touched the lives of so many in our organization, he took great pride in mentoring others and his lifetime of service fuels his legacy. On behalf of our entire membership, know that we have you, his family, in our thoughts and prayers.
