Samuel Hanson Obituary

Samuel Frank Hanson Of Pocatello died at home Thursday, December 2, 2004. He was born April 9, 1914 in Pocatello, Idaho. Hanson earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1940 from the University of California, Berkeley and began his California journalist career in 1943 as night wire editor, rewrite and war desks for United Press in San Francisco. That same year he married fellow Idahoan, the late Barbara (Bobby) Ferney with whom he had four daughters.

After WWII Hanson worked for the Pocatello Post and Pocatello Tribune, and then several California papers, including the Los Gatos Times-Observer. In 1959 he became a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News, and later the education editor, winning numerous awards until his retirement in 1976.

After his divorce from Barbara, Sam returned to Pocatello in 1977 where he attended classes at Idaho State University and then edited two oral histories, became a member of the local arts community (his oil and watercolor paintings of fauvist female nudes hung in coffee shops all over town) and in 1979 married Jean Patterson Swanson.

Hanson is preceded in death by his daughter Sally Jane. He is survived by his wife Jean of Pocatello, her children and grandchildren, his daughters Maja Tregidga of Livingston, MT and her sons Kyle and Loren Keldsen, Karen Huck (Wilbur) of Bend, OR, Elizabeth Williams (Phillip) and their children Meredith and Andrew of Eugene, OR, and his brother Don of Pocatello.

Cremation has been completed by Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Home. A celebration of Sam's life will be held in Pocatello in the summer. For more info, contact Elizabeth (betsy) Williams at [email protected].

Sam Hanson was my grandfather and a great influence on my life. He introduced me to the typewriter and his regular gifts of Hardy Boys mysteries created my love of reading. I was born in San Jose and my mother and I spent my first months of life with Grandpa Sam and Grandma Bobbie in Los Gatos. I miss them both dearly.

My mother, Gretchen Ray, worked with Sam at the San Jose Mercury News. My mom liked and respected Sam so well that when my son, Adam, was born in 1972 she asked me if she could choose his middle name. She chose Samuel, in honor of Samuel Hanson, her dear friend. Sam was so proud. He went right out and bought my son a teddy bear. Sam was a good man. We are better for having known him.

It's interesting to see this internet guestbook site since Dad quit the Merc before he had to learn to use the computer. He never did like modern technology.

I am happy that Dad encouraged me to learn to type so that by my junior year in highschool I could compose a news story on a machine. I thank my Dad for pushing me toward writing, even though I haven't done what he thought I would with it.

He was more proud of my PhD than I ever was and I'm glad, for him, that I got it.

Dad also encouraged me to think about life and not to accept the status quo. He said that he picked journalism for a job because it had the craziest people -- so from him I learned that hard work was good if you were doing what you loved and pointless if you weren't.

I wish you could have known him.
