Steve Sokol
Steve Sokol once did 1,000 sit-ups in 10 minutes and cycled 500 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles without every touching the bike seat -- circus-like feats of endurance and strength that earned him the title,"World's Fittest Man."

So it was particularly shocking to friends and family -- including the young son who worshiped the 54-year-old seemingly superhuman fitness guru -- that Sokol's life would end suddenly in a solo crash on Cottle Road near his south San Jose home.

I just learned of Steve passing today - several months after the fact. I met Steve udring my days working at Schoeber's Athletics Club. There are 2 words that immediately come to mind to describe him:
1 "Genuine"
2 Gentleman

One day he came up to me and said "you should never lose a match because you are tired" (during my days when I played in frequent racquetball tournaments) So I started to train on the "Stairmasters" - Several months later he told me that he regrets telling me that, because I often got on the equipment before he did. He winked, smiled and said that there are "Life-cycles" too you know.

My deepest condolences to his family. He made alot of memories over the years.

Dear Leslie and Alex, I am truly saddened and sorry for your loss. As you know, Steve was always a fixture in the pool at AVAC. I am an aqua instructor there and when I lost 50 lbs he was so kind and praised me, but told me "I will kick your butt if you gain it back" and I told him PLEASE Do! He inspired me and he will truely be missed!

Dear Leslie and Alex,
I know how tough it is to lose such a great man as your husband and father! He was the best of everything! He was kind, loving, caring, sympathetic, and always willing to lend a hand! My son, Lorenzo and I will miss him dearly. He was the Assistant Soccer Coach along with Coach Lam to my son Lorenzo on the AVYSL. He was a good friend and was easy to talk to. He was very knowledgeable and aware of how people acted and reacted. He was pleasant and always had a kind word for all! I can honestly say I have never met such a caring giving person in this area such as Steve. He will remain a beacon of hope in this crazy world where people only seem to care about money, instead of each other! Steve, we will all miss your greatness and pray to God that your spirit will live on forever, in our hearts, and the hearts of all you touched! We will all miss you!

Dear Leslie, Alex, and the rest of the Sokol Family: I send my deepest sympathy and wish you strength during this very difficult time. I was fortunate to work with Steve at Royal Courts. I always hold him in a high regard. With his help and encouragement, I got certified to become a personal trainer. And 20 years later, I still am. I still remember and appreciate many things Steve taught me. He was a great mentor and educator with an infectious enthusiasm and passion. May your life move forward carrying that love and passion you all shared. You're in my thoughts.

Leslie and Alex. I am so sorry for your loss, for our loss. Instantly I was welcomed by Steve. As a freshman swimmer at Tufts University I was immediately welcomed to join the club. He was a sophomore and he had the biggest smile and welcome to me and all of the incoming freshman. He was always the friendliest guy on the team, but we were also a new crop of faces, a new audience, to laugh at and with Steve. Sit ups, he did them endlessly in a speedo on a hard pool deck before he was "world fittest man" - me, I did maybe 50 in the 4 years I was at Tufts. Steve was always tireless, swimming, studying and making people smile. I visited Steve only once shortly after college in San Jose, typical 24 year old single guy pad (little or no furniture) with bikes and workout gear strewn about - he was so bored with corporate and itching to do something no one every did before, but making people smile was a special gift he had. I was so sorry to hear of your loss, a special guy with a bright smile. Miss you Steve

To Leslie and Alex,
I only knew Steve as a friend in the deep end of the pool. Several of us would follow each other around, water-jogging and talking to pass the time. Steve didn't talk about himself, so I didn't know he was famous. He was just Steve. But he did talk about the two of you, where you were, how you were, what you were doing... he was so proud of you both, and you were the center of his world. I hope these words are of some comfort to you, and you have my deepest sympathy.

Leslie and Alex,

I want to send my deepest condolences on the passing of Steve. I knew him for 10 years at Studio Fit and Body Firm. He was always a very humble and kind person, and his fitness accomplishments were so amazing that it was difficult to comprehend the skill, dedication and training required to complete them. I always had to stop and stare when he did his incredible stretching routines. I loved to watch the excitement in his eyes when he talked about Alex’s accomplishments. I will miss him very much.

Leslie,
It was so sad to hear about the passing of your husband Steve. I met him at the gym years ago and I was in awe of him. He was the most dedicated, authentic, humble guy. As I got to know him I also saw his funny side, and his love of family. He was devoted to his passion, so inspirational, yet so unassuming. He always asked about my life at the fire station and what kind of a workout we had, even giving me some tips on how to motivate the older crew. What a great role model he was, not only to Alex, but to all who knew him. He really was a superman!

With warm regards,

I am saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I haven't seen him or Leslie for many years, but did have the opportunity to interview them on my community access tv program. I was caught by what a wonderful, healthy couple they were and great role models to kids and adults, alike. My thoughts and prayers are with Leslie, the children and extended family. Also, for our community that has lost a wonderful man. May his lasting gift to us be that we live healthly lifestyles by being living examples.

Leslie & Alex, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Steve was a very fine man and so we know your loss is all the more profound. A few years back Steve came and spoke at the low-income middle school where I teach. Those students seldom have the benefit of athletes of Steve's caliber taking a genuine interest in them and it was heartwarming to see him interact with them. It was one of their great memories of that year. Leslie, Alex, whenever we saw Steve and asked about the two of you, his eyes would light up and you could see and hear the love he has for you. We know that love will sustain you in the coming months. May God bless and comfort you both.

Leslie & Alex,

I truly have the most cherished memories of Steve -- from our carefree days at Tufts, to your wonderful wedding, and meeting Alex (or as Steve would say, "the magnificent Alexander") for the first time on Cape Cod. Needless to say, Kitty and I are so heartbroken for you.

As Dave Lindstedt wrote in this guest book, we stayed in touch albeit not enough. Nevertheless, I cherished my occasional phone conversations with Steve. And if I didn't reach him on the phone, I always got a kick out of his "swimming, biking, hiking or playing with Alex if I'm lucky" message. I will always think of Steve as a close, refreshing, sincere and loving friend. Steve is also my hero (the only friend I ever wrote a newspaper article about -- "52,003 SIT-UPS - Steve Sokol Suffers for Fitness"). When I asked him why he did the extra 3 sit-ups, he said: "because I lost count."

And even though I knew Steve for many years before he became a husband and dad, there can hardly be a mention of him without recognizing how immensely important his family always was to him.

Leslie and Alex, Kitty and I are thinking about you and praying for you and our friend Steve.

Stevie, I love you.

Dear Leslie & Alex,
I just wanted to say that we are so sorry for your loss. My son was on a kindergarten basketball team at the YMCA with your son Alex that Steve coached. I remember Steve as a enthusiastic and positive coach. One thing I remember is at the end of the year pizza party he said some nice words about all of the kids on the team. When it came time to talk about Alex, he starting choking up. It was really touching and obvious how proud and how much he loved his son.

Leslie,
About twenty years ago I was in your original DanceKids class at Graystone Elementary. You hadn't met Steve yet. To this day, I remember your first date, and I even remember when you two got engaged. Steve came to a couple of our performances at the park and I always thought he was so nice. Next thing I knew, you two were married. I ran into you nine years ago at Valley Fair. You were still so beautiful especially when gushing about Steve or Alex, your then three year old son. Oh Leslie, I can't even begin to imagine your pain. I only hope that your heart will soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times you all had together. And I hope these memories will help you through your grief. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Alex.

With much love from,

Leslie and Alex my condolences on the passing of your husband, father and friend.I will miss seeing the three of you at the Los Gatos All Comers Meets.I will always fondly remember the loving enthusiastic and encouraging father that Steve was to Alex as he competed in multiple events sporting those little sunglasses as he raced around the track. And while doing so he'd finish ahead of alot of folks much older than himself..Steve could be seen running along the inside of the track at various times passionately cheering Alex's name and would always be at the finish line to reward him with a big hug or a high five for a job well done !! Years ago I also worked with Steve at Royal Courts he as the fitness center director and I as one of the in-house massage therapists..then and throughout the years we'd cross paths and Ihave always held him in the highest regard..he marched to the beat of a different drummer and was authentically good as they come.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of this news about Steve. I have delivered mail in your neighborhood for the past 20 years, until my recent retirement, about a month ago. As a regular lap swimmer at AVAC, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to speak to Steve fairly often. He was always kind and friendly and willing to talk and share his knowledge and experiences with me. And while he liked to talk, he was also a good listener. I recently spoke to him about a shoulder injury that I am struggling with. He listened with genuine concern, asked several questions and offered some good suggestions and advise. He also offered to meet with me at a later date, to do a more detailed evaluation. Over the past year and half we spoke about a wide range of subjects, but clearly one of Steve's all time favorite subjects was his son, Alex. He spoke about Alex, and his many sporting activities, with such pride and confidence. One thing is for certain, Steve loved Alex as much as any father could possibly love a son. I'm sure Steve will be missed by many but by nobody more than Alex. I will also miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with Steve, Alex and Leslie.

Sincerely,
Ash Vandersteen

I have known Steve for as long as I can remember. He was my Dad's Fitness Director at Ronnie Lott's and Royal Courts Club Fitness. I can honestly say that he was my first mentor in the health and fitness field. His workouts were legendary and I always found myself trying to mimic his exercises.

Steve was always willing to lend a helping hand and was one of those genuine people that you don't come across too often. I will miss talking to him about fitness, family, and just life in general. My heartfelt prayers go out to the Sokol family.

Steve and I were teammates on the Tufts Swim Team. He was one-of-a-kind then, and it's clear his uniqueness never dimmed over the years. Hearing the news of Steve's passing is such a shock, but it's also bringing back a flood of great memories - and some of the best laughs I've ever had. Steve was absolutely fearless; he could pull off the most outrageous stuff and somehow emerge unscathed. Later on, of course, he channeled that energy and that determination in his remarkable accomplishments. In college, he was a character in the best sense of the word. I regret that Steve and I fell out of touch over the years, but I certainly never forgot him.

I'd like to offer my deepest sympathies to Steve's family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.

Steve and I swam on the swim team and lived at ATO at Tufts U. in the mid 70s. Steve was genuine, sensitive and humble, yet was always game for fun and nutty antics. Pushed the envelope and continued to do so throughout his life. We stayed in touch over the years, albeit not often enough. Yet luckily and oddly we reconnected just a few days ago. We caught up on kids, family etc. An excerpt from his email on Sunday shows Steve cherished every day:
"....time flies and doesn't it suck!!!!! We're in our last year of elementary school and I already have a sick stomach and heavy heart as I watch the clock tick.I try to make the most of each day with Alex, but it goes too fast I'm afraid to say." S. Sokol 3/6/2011

I was Steve Sokol's swimming coach at Tufts University. Good old Double S! Jody Durst (Steve's teammate and roommate at Tufts) left a message last night.
Steve was admired by everyone he touched.....his personality would light up a room...the legendary (and all true) stories about his extraordinary endurance capabilities left others awestruck...like the time he rode his bike between LA and San Francisco, nonstop, without a saddle...try doing that for a mile...and you will come to grips with a man whose moral fiber was as genuine as his love for his family and friends. The last time we were together was for teammate Dave Lindstedt's wedding (1988) in Beverly Hills...I fondly recall hitting him lightly in the abdomen, and it felt like coming in contact with a concrete wall...now that he and his brother Lanny are together again, they can get a heavenly Ironman team ready for competition! Thank you Steve for always making me smile...and for being my friend! Your devoted pal, Coach Don Megerle

Steve was one of those people who made you feel like you could accomplish anything you set your mind and heart out to do, afterall, that's what he did. You will be sincerely missed in this world, Steve. You were a true "Ironman," in every sense of the word and an inspiration to us all. Our prayers for strength go out to Steve's family.

I am an employee of Juniper Networks. About once a year for the past 3 years Steve would come in to give a lecture on nutrition, foods to eat etc. I remember him clearly. He used to wear shoes with springs under the heel. He was always cheerful and full of simplicity and wisdom. He was authentic and had integrity. He cut through all the hype of the food marketing industry. I always looked forward to his visits and have benefited from his knowledge. I am deeply saddened at his untimely demise. My heart goes out to the surviving family. Steve was a rare unique wonderful person. I will miss him.

Steve has inspired us ever since we learned of his impressive physical fitness feats back in 1992 or so, when he was the Director of Fitness at Royal Courts Fitness Club, later known as Club ONE. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with Steve's family, friends and others who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Sincerely,
Wei & Darrell Martin

I've known Steve for a great many years and I remember when he broke the sit-ups record. It was at a gym in downtown San Francisco and I was the guy who provided the clock. I had known him from racing in the Bay Area. I always thought that I was in fantastic shape until that day. I've seen his son Alex turn into a marvelous runner and human being. I am going to miss seeing him at the races. He was absolutely nuts in the best possible way. I was just talking about him to friends the other day on our long mountain bike ride. Hard to believe...

I just wanted to let you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I was recently inspired by his generousity, as he handed my father a book, and said "Melissa would like this." Indeed, the book "Ishmael" changed my life, and I would like acknowledge that his heart was bigger than all of his accomplishments, I am forever grateful to simply have had him, and the blessing of Leslie and Alex's presence in my family's life. Best,
Melissa Cade

Leslie and Alex,

I know this is a very hard time for both of you. I just want to let you know that I have always enjoyed seeing your family at local races. I have been so impressed with Alex's ability as a runner. I hope that both of you will continue to run and compete--you are inspirations.

I am keeping both of you in prayer.

May the Lord richly bless you,
