Winifred Arthur Obituary

ARTHUR, Winifred -- a native of Reedley, California, Winnie was born on June 6, 1935 and passed away in San Jose on April 5, 2003. Beloved wife of 46 years to James Arthur, loving mother to James, Susan, Karen and Kristen, proud grandmother to Robin, Jimmy and John. She will be dearly missed by her mother, Laura Isaak, sisters, Virginia Carlson and Kathleen Rothchild and brother Robert Isaak. Winnie was baptized at 1st Mennonite Church in Reedley. She graduated from Reedley High School in 1953 and from Fresno County Hospital School of Nursing in 1956. Winnie worked passionately to better children's lives. She volunteered as a court designated child advocate for over a decade, served on the board of the U.S. Swimming Association, served as a Girl Scouts of America troop leader in Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Juniors, and served as a Neighborhood Association Chairman. Winnie also worked with children as a Sunday Church School and Vacation Church School teacher at Saratoga Presbyterian Church. Music was also a very important part of Winnie's life. She was an active member of church choirs where ever she lived, including the 1st Mennonite Church of Reedley, Granada Hills Presbyterian Church, Community Christian Church in Lincolnshire, Illinois, and Saratoga Presbyterian Church. She also directed school musical choirs. Winnie was a long time volunteer at Planned Parenthood. As a registered nurse, it was important to Winnie that healthcare be available to all women. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Winnie Arthur's Life on Friday, April 11th at 3 p.m. at Saratoga Presbyterian Church, 20455 Herriman Avenue, Saratoga, California. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be made to one of the following: Lucile Packard Children's Fund - Teen Health Van, 770 Welch Road, Suite 350, Palo Alto, CA 94304; Mennonite Central Committee - World Relief Fund, 21 South 12th Street, P.O. Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500; Court Designated Child Advocates, 115 E. Gish Road, Suite 252, San Jose, CA 95112.
