Daniel Peter Kotnik
Daniel Peter Kotnik, known affectionately as Dan to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, at the St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota.
Born on December 22, 1955, in
Virginia, Minnesota, to Joseph and Lillian Kotnik. Dan's kind spirit and unwavering integrity touched the lives of many throughout his 69 years.
Dan was the beloved husband of Vickie Kotnik, with whom he shared countless cherished memories. A family man at heart, he was the proud father of Jessica Lehman (Jeremy) and Katie Harkonen (Ben). His grandchildren, Ethan Lehman and Lilly Harkonen, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Along with his brothers, Joe (Stella) and Jon (Angie); numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister.
A 1974 graduate of Eveleth High School, Dan furthered his education at Hibbing Vo Tech, where he completed the Electrical program. His dedication to his craft led him to a fulfilling career working at multiple mining locations. Dan retired from Keetac in 2018, after many years of hard work and commitment to the industry.
Dan's contributions to his community were significant and varied. For over 24 years, he served on the United Way Board, selflessly assisting with numerous tasks and projects. His involvement with SOAR (Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees) showcased his dedication to his fellow workers, both during his career and into retirement. Dan was also an avid mental health advocate, passionately supporting initiatives that aimed to improve mental health services and awareness.
A man of faith, Dan was a devout Catholic who lived his life following the principles of kindness, charity, and love. His beliefs were the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him in his daily interactions and his approach to life's challenges.
In his leisure time, Dan became an enthusiastic member of the walking club at the Iron Trail Motors Event Center (ITMEC), where he enjoyed the camaraderie and the health benefits of regular exercise. He found joy in the thrill of stock car racing, the intellectual challenge of puzzles, and the creativity on display at craft shows.
Dan's legacy is one of love, service, and dedication. His infectious smile, generous spirit, and unwavering support for his loved ones and community will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He left the world a better place, and his memory will continue to inspire those he left behind.
Daniel Peter Kotnik's life was a tapestry of commitment, love, and joy. His family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate his remarkable journey through life, grateful for the time they shared with a truly extraordinary man. Dan's departure from this world leaves a void that can never be filled, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved and served.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 11th, 2025, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 309 3rd St. South in
Virginia, MN at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with luncheon to follow.
