Mary Anne (Krebs) Kwiecinski
Mary Anne (Krebs) Kwiecinski passed away at Edgewood Virginia Memory Care on September 21, 2025. She was born in the Krebs family Northside Virginia home on July 21, 1928, along with her twin brother Stanley.
After her 1946 graduation from Virginia High School, where she excelled in studies, student group leadership, and athletics. She worked as office manager and head bookkeeper at Central Supply in downtown Virginia.
In 1948, Mary Anne met the love of her life, Walter Kwiecinski, a WWII Army veteran and former prisoner of the Japanese, at a polka dance in John's Bar (now Popper's) on Chestnut Street. They remained polka and waltz fans and dancers until Walter's death in 1988. Mary Anne, known for her skill at the "Polish hop," continued to attend polka festivals and dances with friends into her 90s.
Walter and Mary Anne were married in 1950 at the original Sacred Heart Catholic Church across the street from the Krebs home. They were blessed with a son and two daughters. The couple lived in Detroit, Duluth, and Hermantown, before settling in the Krebs home in Virginia in 1968.
Mary Anne was active in area women's sports, including bowling, volleyball, bocce, and golf. She was an avid smear player and remained a lifelong sports fan, especially following her grand and great grandchildren's sports. She volunteered to serve funerals at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a faithful member. She was also head election judge on Virginia's Northside for many years.
Mary Anne was preceded in death by parents Matt and Mary (Matko) Krebs, husband Walter, sisters Evelyn (15 months), Albina (Joe) Prebeg, Julie (Frank) Beloy, Elinor (John) Bell, Kathleen (Bob) Martin, and twin brother Stanley (Lois) Krebs.
She is survived by sister Dianne (Chuck) White, son Stephen (Marcia), daughters Della (Scott) Edstrom and Paula (Terry) Keseley, 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia on Friday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m., Fr. David Forsman celebrant, with Fr. Babu Mandagiri concelebrating. Visitation will be one hour prior at the church, and luncheon to follow.
Interment will be at a later date at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery alongside Walter, her husband of 37 years.
Our special thanks to Hannah and Danielle, Lisa and Amber, and each of the kind and loving caregivers at Edgewood Memory Care, where Mary Anne spent the final year of her life. We also thank the Essentia Virginia emergency room and hospital staff, and the Essentia hospice staff who attended to her with such kindness and professionalism during her final six weeks.
