Richard Lorenz Obituary

Richard 'Dick' Edward Lorenz

Richard "Dick" Edward Lorenz of Cloverdale, Minn., passed away peacefully in his home at age 87 on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

He was surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born on March 8, 1938, in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Mary (Maurin) and Harold Lorenz. He attended Greenway schools and graduated in 1956, where he was a star wrestler and football player, and likened to the looks of Elvis. He was in the National Guard for 8 years, where he trained as a medic. He married his sweetheart, Helen LaBar, on June 30", 1962. Together, they built their family home on the same property where he was raised in Cloverdale. They raised 7 children and welcomed 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Richard retired from Hibbing Taconite, where he was a welding foreman and mentor to many. He continued to offer his knowledge as a consultant for the mines for several years after retirement. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He was a man of unparalleled integrity, wisdom, and humor. He cherished his family and exemplified the encouraging phrase he often shared: "When the going gets tough, the Lorenz's get going."

Richard will be dearly missed by his survivors, including his beloved wife of 63 years, Helen; children, Brenda (Ken) Haigh, Rose Lorenz, Daniel (Eva) Lorenz, Duane Lorenz, Robin (John) Hachey, Heather (Rodney) Bibeau, and Sara (Derek) Elioff; grandchildren, Dominique, Natalie, Josh, Amber, Nicholas, Nora, Madilyn, Philip, Matthew, Jessica, Jared, Karlyn, Jack, Jeffrey, Merrick, Dominic and Natasha; great-grandchildren, Carson, Aden, Abel, Ryder, Raymond, Gracilyn, Aubrey and Christian; sisters, Janice (Denny) Gertzen and Karen Lorenz; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosanne Lorenz, Charlene and Roger Moe, Kathleen LaBar, Louise Elston, and Chip Skaar; aunt, Della Lemay; many more loved relatives and friends; and adored canine companion, Gidget.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; eldest son, Richard "Rick" Lorenz and Rick's infant son, Garrett Shawn; brother, James "Jimmy" Lorenz; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Clarence Hosier, Shirley and Ben Bonneville, Marlene Skaar, Everett LaBar, Eddie LaBar, and Hugh Elston; niece, Regina Lorenz; and nephews, Trevor and Lucas Skaar.

Friends and family are invited to attend a mass at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Nashwauk, Minn., on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will be held from 10:30 until the beginning of mass at 11:30. Burial will be at a later date at the Nashwauk Township Cemetery. Our family would like to express our gratitude to all who helped us during the loss of our patriarch, especially St. Croix Hospice, with a special thank you to Will and Chris, and the Dougherty Funeral Home.
