Donald Gregory Obituary

Donald Bruce Gregory
November 17, 1969 - February 12, 2018
Donald B. Gregory passed away on February 12, 2018 at home in Emmett, ID after a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 48. He was born Nov. 17, 1969 in San Luis Obispo to Frank B. and Janet (Blake) Gregory.
Donald graduated from Woodbridge Senior High School in 1987, followed by Monterey Peninsula College in 1990 with a General Education Associates, and Boise State University in 1993 with a degree in Mathematics, Secondary Education with Certification in Physical Science.
Donald gave to his community through his passion for teaching and soccer. His field time spanned 22 years from secondary school through adulthood playing on various men's leagues. He was integral in bringing the soccer program to Emmett High School. For 21 seasons, Donald assisted and eventually coached boys' and girls' soccer in both Emmett and Carmel, California until 2015. He continued his support of the program until his death, upon which Emmett High School named the school's soccer field in his honor.
Donald taught in Emmett, ID from 1993-2000, and after a break teaching in Carmel, California returned to Emmett's students from 2006-2017. From teaching math, physics, leadership, to advising chess club and space club, to helping with IT and lunch duty, his influence on his students and players went beyond the classroom and field. He was passionate about teaching and cared so much for the students and the community. Donald was known for always going above and beyond expectations.
A lifelong Cubs fan, the students and staff of Emmett High gifted Donald with a game-laden trip to Chicago in 2017. The generosity of this gift, not to mention his thrill at seeing and interacting with his beloved Cubbies, was truly a highlight of his life.
Donald was preceded in death by his mother Janet, grandparents Frank & Roberta Gregory, John & Carol Blake and Uncle Don Louderbough. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer (nee Truman); daughters, Leah Carol and Emma Roberta; his father, Ret. Colonel Frank (Charlotte) Gregory; sister, Kristy (Duane) Bayless; uncles, Dana Gregory and Jim (Lauri) Blake; aunt, Sheila (Dave) Korn; cousins, John (Baily) Blake, Khrysten (Nate) Smith and extended family members.
The family will plan a celebration of Donald's life at a future date.
Donald's favorite quote: "If you're going through hell, keep going" Winston Churchill.

Dear Gregory family,
I have been so saddened to hear of Donald's passing. I just can't believe that Donald is no longer here. Donald was a colleague but also a mentor to me as a teacher, and by the way, I am a lot older than he is. He was so committed to teaching and making a difference. When we taught together at Carmel High, we collaborated every day. We spent hours talking about how to teach Algebra I and Geometry. We shared strategies for teaching and strategies for being the best that we could be as contributors to society. We wrote finals together. We were such great collaborators as teachers. Donald was so devoted to helping every child. I learned so much from him and his approach to helping kids who were struggling. He was a real class act.I will never forget that his personalized license plate was Chivalry. How many people from his generation knew that word? Our world has lost a real gem. My heart goes out to the family. The education world has lost a tremendous contributor. I had hoped to see him again even though he moved to Idaho. It is so sad to think I will never have that opportunity but on the other hand, I am so happy that he was in the world for long enough to contribute to so many lives.
