Dorothy Pratt Obituary

Dorothy Lucile McConnel Pratt
March 11, 1916 - July 14, 2016
Dorothy Lucile McConnel Pratt was born to Frank Andrew McConnel and Hattie Lucile Bennett McConnel March 11, 1916 on the Anderson Creek Ranch between Emmett and Montour. Dorothy was the fifth born of eight children Avis, Elaine, Alva, Andy, Audrey, Mary Jane and Ann. All have preceded her in death.
At the age of 6 she started walking to school in Montour with her brothers and sisters from Johnson Creek where her parents had homesteaded. It was during this time that her family purchased the Marsh-Ireton ranch in Montour, shortening the walk by three miles.
Dorothy graduated from Montour High School and the College of Idaho. She began her teaching career in 1939 in Liberty School, a one room school house at Sweet with eight grades.
In December 1939 she married Kenneth Eugene Pratt, putting her teaching career on hold while they started their family. In the next five years three children, David (Sharon), Leonard (Esther) and Sandra (Jim) Amos, were added to make the family complete. She returned to teaching in 1945 and taught at Montour and Sweet until she retired in the '60's. Soon, Horseshoe Bend School District began efforts to encourage her to "unretire". The yearn to teach convinced her to "unretire" and she taught school in Horseshoe Bend another 10 years before retiring for good.
Dorothy was an avid Scrabble player, a member of the Syringa Club and the Valley of Plenty quilt club. She made graduation quilts for all her grandchildren, focusing on their specific requests or interests. These quilts were presented to each grandchild when they graduated from High School. She is survived by her three children, David (Sharon), Leonard (Esther) Sandra (Jim) Amos and special "almost son" of 50 years Gwen (Nadine) Duree, eighteen grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, many great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Burial will be in the Sweet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Syringa Club, c/o Judy Peterson, Treasurer, 11725 N. Highway 52, Horseshoe Bend, ID 83629.
The family thanks Horizon Home Health and Hospice, with special thanks to Caregiver Lisa Drain, Chaplain Clayne Beck and Social Worker Bill Hodges for their unconditional support and loving care of our mother.

To begin, I want everyone to know that my Grandma was an AmaZing role model! She was a head of her time, in many areas not the least of which she was a working mom, teaching for about 30 years. Raising 3 kids and putting up with a rascally husband ("Damn it Dot!")
She always maintained decorum, was a lady always. She was the ultimate Hostess! I strive to be like her in that matter, and find myself always lacking.

I remember her reading to us when we were little, especially "Animals I'll Never Forget " put out by the Reader's Digest.

I remember her swinging up into the saddle on Ol'Pint' (as in pinto) and moving cattle up to High Valley or just around the ranch.

She is in a better place now, probably visiting with my Mom, GrGpa Kennth, and others, who have been waiting for her. Her goal was to live to 100, and she By God did that! Let's celebrate her beautiful life!
Love to all

I will always have a special place in my heart for Aunt Dorothy. I loved our visits there. She always made me feel so loved and accepted. She will be greatly missed. As I have said there is happiness in heaven but sadness on earth.

This wonderful lady was one person I truly looked up to as I grew! What's also special is that she graduated from high school and went to college with my incredible father Bill Cox! I became a teacher and remember the role model that she and Lorna Valberg set for all to follow!! We truly have lost an extraordinary individual in this society! To all the family I'm so sorry for your loss and want you to know this is one person that her guidance was not lost on as I grew into maturity!! The good Lord just received a valuable angel!! Rest in Peace!!!

The matriarch of our family quietly went to be with her husband, seven siblings and other loved ones on July 14, 2016. We all knew that every day, in fact every hour, was a gift to us. At 100 she gave us as much time as she possibly could. She always gave. That was her nature. She gave songs, stories, delicious food, handmade gifts, and love. She taught us all the meaning of family. I knew that she couldn't be here forever, but as prepared as I thought I was, my heart is missing her terribly. I can only hope to be as strong, caring and loving as my beautiful Grandma Dorothy. And did I mention smart? This lady would play a mean game of scrabble. She didn't "let" me win just because I was a kid. She taught me new worlds and ways to play better next time. She taught me how to handle life with grace, (competitive kids don't lose games happily, lol). And she was always interested in new things. Our first selfie together was a first for her. we both laughed and made faces.
I am blessed to be your Granddaughter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Until we meet again. I love you!❤
