William Schmidt Obituary

William Lee "Bill" Schmidt, 82, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, in Burley, Idaho.

He was born on August 18, 1942, to Frank and Frances Woodword Schmidt in Long Beach, California. In 1949 the family moved to beautiful Mackay, Idaho where they worked hard on the family farm and The Cottonwood Grove Pavilion and Campground.

Bill, as he was known by family and friends, graduated from Mackay High School in 1960. He then attended the University of Idaho and became a lifelong Vandals fan.

During Vietnam Bill was called to serve his country in the Army. He was deployed to Vietnam where he was stationed as a firefighter at Cam Ranh Bay. After receiving an honorable discharge for his service, Bill began working for the United States Forest Service.

On October 21, 1967, he married his sweetheart, Jill M. Moffett in Mackay, Idaho. They were blessed with two sons, Cody and Chris.

After 33 years of loyal service with the Rural Electric Association, Bill retired in 1997. He enjoyed his retirement and spent the rest of his life in peace and happiness.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, loyal friend, and a proud veteran. He cherished time with family, friends and the many deer and other animals who visited him often. Most of all he found joy sharing his love of sports, camping, hunting and fishing with his boys. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom and integrity.

Surviving are his two sons, Cody (Jaylin) Schmidt of Mackay, ID and Chris (Kristin) Schmidt of Boise, ID; his sister Carol Young of Blackfoot, ID; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jill Schmidt and his parents, Frank and Frances Schmidt.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mackay High School Auditorium. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Joe Nowacki Post and the United States Army Honor Guard. The family asks that you honor Bill by sharing stories or memories of him that will surely bring a smile.
