Barbara Lingle Obituary

Barbara Ann Lingle, 81, of Metropolis, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Nov. 21, 2023, at Massac Memorial Hospital surrounded by the love of her friends and family.

Barbara "Barb" Lingle was born on Feb. 22, 1942, to parents John and Ada Hughes of Newark, Ohio. Her passion for school began with her own education. She was a member of her high school's class of 1960. After her high school years, Barb attended Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, to pursue a degree in education. While there, Barb met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Lingle. Soon after graduating from Asbury, the two were wed on June 14, 1964.

Barb went on to teach in Massac County, touching the lives of many young children in the district, teaching at Unity Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary School, Metropolis Middle School, and ending her career at Brookport Elementary School. Barb taught all grades, K-8 (except fifth grade). Many former students have gone on to create fantastic lives and are fondly reminded of Mrs. Lingle's influence in their lives. To further aid in her teaching, Barb got her master's in education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Barb is survived in life by her husband of 59 years, Bob Lingle of Metropolis; sister, Betty (Bob) Shaufl of Pinkerenton, Ohio; children, Benita (Jeff) Yonosick of Metropolis and Bart Lingle of Metropolis; grandchild, Sam Scott of Metropolis; nieces Christy (Brian) Rockwell of Westerville, Ohio, Becky (Adam) Rinn of Mooresville, North Carolina, Suzi (Tim) Nelson of Robinsdale, Minnesota, Lori Eyre of Mt. Prospect; nephew, Roger (Cheryl) Wells of Cookeville, Tennessee, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.

Barb is preceded in death by her parents, John and Ada Hughes; niece, Cheri Shields; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Carole (Lingle) Wells; and mother-in-law, Birdie Lingle.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at First United Methodist Church in Metropolis with services provided by Rev. Joey Dunning and Rev. Justin Ramer. A burial service followed at IOOF cemetery in Metropolis.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to COPE food pantry, P.O. Box 761, Metropolis, IL, 62960; or Weekend Blessings, c/o First United Methodist Church, 100 East Fifth St. Metropolis, IL, 62960; both of which Barb cared for deeply and volunteered time and money towards in her life to ensure residents of Massac County, as well as their children, could have access to food when needed.

Pallbearers will be Steve Miller, Danny Goins, Mitch Bremer, Mike Moorman, John Shelby, and Mike Beggs.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Tim Estes, Don Sawyer, Mike Whitelock, and David Glass.
