Alfred Hennessy Obituary

Business and family man, Alfred Garrett (Garry) Hennessy, was known for his infectious smile and shining eyes, ability to include all persons at a table, and delightfully idiosyncratic intellect. This unique human being yielded his body to stomach cancer on January 13th 2014, surrounded by love at his home in Ashland, Massachusetts. Garry Hennessy left an impression on whomever and wherever he went. This trail began in Sacramento, California on April 9, 1972 born to military parents John Garrett and Sharon Hennessy. Garry continued to leave an enduring mark while living on airforce bases in Virginia; Misawa, Japan; Dover, NH; Scarborough, ME; and finally Wayland, MA where his family (now including a sister Shannon and brother Daniel) joined the civilian population and attended Wayland Public High School, where his mother, Dr. Sharon Hennessy was principal. In his formative years, Garry spent his time balancing typical teenage milestones with a passion for HAM radio and solar energy. A well-liked teen, Garry entered the Mechanical Engineering program at UMass Dartmouth. Shortly after which his family made a move to Scituate, MA. The proximity to the Ocean and famous seaside storms aroused a latent love for weather (a passion for which he is well known today.) Earning a BA in Mechanical engineering, Garrys spontaneity, bullish nature, and inability to be pinned to expectations allowed him the courage to start Boston-Based and award-winning, Mercury Moving & Storage Systems with high school friend, Ted Keenan. Started in 1997 with just a pickup truck and car trailer, the company has grown to include warehouse storage and thrived, winning many accolades. In 2002, Garrys cherished spirit was intertwined in marriage to Jessica McMaster Hennessy. The two soon became not only partners in life, but also in business, when in 2003, Ted Keenan amicably left Mercury Moving. Garry and Jessica eventually became vested as partners of a more important venture - as parents to now 4-year-old Rhett, and 2-year-old Vincent. Garry would easily say that his least impressive accomplishment was growing Mercury Moving to be one of the most respected moving companies in Massachusetts. Garry viewed his greatest accomplishment as his role of a loving husband and father who lived to see the smiling faces of his two boys. Garry then courageously fought cancer and endured painful treatments to see as many smiles and spend as much time as possible with his two boys. He shared with them his love of airports, air shows, and trains, and would have eventually involved them in his amateur weather stations, if he had not been taken at the untimely age of 41. Those who were lucky enough to know Garry received the gift of that lasting impression he started making in 1972- a joyous smile and attitude, inquisitive nature, kind and helpful soul, a scientific honesty, and generally a unique persona that will not be forgotten. Garry is survived by his wife Jessica, his sons Rhett and Vincent, his parents Garrett and Sharon Hennessy, his sister Shannon Croke, brother Daniel Hennessy, mother-in-law Helen McMaster, and a number of cherished Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, in-laws, and nieces. He will be missed. A funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan. 19th at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 2:00-5:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a college fund has been established for Garry's children. To his family I express my sincerest condolences on Gary's passing. He plowed my driveway and I always ran out with cash so he would feel as happy to be there as I was to have him. He always asked for financial advice and I told him to keep what he had, and we'd laugh. I last saw Gary a few months ago at the mattress place, he said Jim I always liked you. I felt he knew his time was short. Gary I always liked you too. To his family, his mom, wife and children: I hope your faith brings you courage to carry on in peace knowing we'll all meet again, and it will seem like the wink of an eye.
