Barbara Coburn Obituary

WESTON: Barbara Franklin Coburn, 84, of Wellesley and previously a 52-year resident of Weston, died in her sleep on June 24, 2015 following a brief illness. The daughter of the late John and Louise Franklin of Worcester, she attended the Bancroft School and Wellesley College, majoring in Art History. She received a M. Ed. from Boston University. After raising her children Barbara began teaching as a substitute in the Weston Public Schools before embarking on a 21-year career there teaching second and third grade. She served on the Weston Forest and Trails Commission and the Drumlin Farm Sanctuary Committee, among many civic and volunteer activities.
An avid rider and basketball player in her youth, Barbara enjoyed tennis and paddle tennis, and outdoor activities including mountain climbing, camping and canoe trips with her family, birdwatching, and nature hikes. She was active in many communities and supported civic, cultural, and social action organizations in greater Boston and beyond. Barbara’s interests included painting, reading, conservation, music, and theater. Most of all she loved following the interests and activities of her many friends and relatives.
She was predeceased by her husband Frederick Rhodes Coburn, a daughter Elizabeth Chapman Coburn, her sister Joan Franklin Prensner and her brother Richard Cable Franklin. She is survived by: her sister and brother-in-law Janet and Howard Amidon; five children, Jay and his wife Gina, Dirk and his wife Jeanine, Martha and her husband Bob Carlson, Ed and his wife Sandy, and Rob and his husband Averitt Buttry; twelve grandchildren whom she adored, Ben, Chris, A.J., and Eddie, and their father Geoff Blum, Liza, Ali, Aimee, Gwen, Alex, Fred, Sara, and Liam; her brother-in-law Larry Coburn and his wife Gabriella, her sister-in-law Ann Coburn, and her former daughter-in-law, Karen Fine Coburn; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Coburn invariably waved kindly to me when I rode my bicycle past her home as a teen. Her name returns to me easily, across the miles and years, Martha had been an occasional playmate. I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. Barbara was a mentor and colleague to me. The many children in her care in Weston were so fortunate. She was a wonderful teacher and person.

To Barbara's family. Barbara was deeply committed to mass Audubon's Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary. As a member of our Sanctuary Committee she was a tireless volunteer. Her passion and energy inspired us all. She will be deeply missed by all of us. With heartfelt condolences. Christy Foote-Smith, former Sanctuary Director (until June 27).

To all Barbara's wonderful children-- 7/2/15--I just read about your mother's death and I am unstrung. She was one of my favorite friends. Even tho 84 is a respectable age to leave this world (I also am 84) it seems far too early. She and I went to see Mary Lou Strong last Christmas so I at least got to visit with her then.

I have many, many fond memories--tennis, church, good conversations, etc. I was particularly impressed with her painting after her retirement and she did a great deal for the church.

Some of you know that I have been living in S. Portland, ME the last 20 years and you may or not know I had a stroke 6 years ago which left me with an unusable right hand and a wobbly leg. The worst of it is I can't drive. However, I will do everything I can to get to the service. She meant that much to me.

I know you all, especially the grandchildren, will miss her greatly, as will I.

My Blessings,

Sally Cox

Dear Dirk, Ed, Martha, Rob and Jay, Thank you for generously sharing your mother's time and attention with the world. She was a lodestar for me in the time I've known her, and an inspiration to all who knew her. For as much as I will always miss her, I know your grief is exponentially heavier. Greatest sympathies to each of you.

My deepest sympathy to Barbara's family. Barbara and I both taught in the Weston system. She was my mentor, my support and my friend. After her retirement our friendship continued to grow. She was my Revels buddy for over thirty years. The Christmas season didn't really begin until Barbara and I made our way into Cambridge each year. Barbara was a very special lady. I will miss her.

My deepest sympathy to Barbara's family. She expressed love and pride for all of you. I taught with her for many years at the Brook and Country Schools, where I observed her kindness and caring for children. I know that ripples out into the world through each child she taught. Peace and love to you.

Dear Coburn Family,

My sincere sympathies on the loss of Barbara. We became friends at First Parish and enjoyed many dinner connections events . Two years ago she and I drove to Grafton to visit one of her old education pals, Polly Struthers, and we had a wonderful afternoon together. I will miss her. Truly, Jan O'Keefe

Barbara was a kind, humble, and intelligent force in my life who always supported and encouraged me in my endeavors. I am so sorry she is gone, and I shall miss her terribly. But I take comfort in knowing she had a peaceful death and rejoins Fred. I picture them in a canoe together! A life well lived. Love and hugs to M, J, D, E and R.
