Elka Troutman Obituary

Elka R. (Stokar) Troutman, age 52 years, of Ashland on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. For 15 years, she was the beloved wife of Jeffery Troutman. Loving mother of Joshua and Jacob Troutman. Cherished daughter of Irwin & Louise (Hoffman) Stokar of Newton. Dear sister of Shari Parks of Watertown, Ellen Stokar of Livingston, NJ, Faith Stokar of Newton, and Jeffrey Stokar of Newton, and adoring sister-in-law of Debbie Troutman of Dayton, OH. Also survived by many devoted nieces, nephews and friends. Elka loved to read and was particularly passionate about promoting children's literacy. She served as the coordinator for the Ashland Summer Reading Program for many years and loved encouraging kids to embrace books as a window to their own imaginations. Above all Elka loved and was loved by her family. A self-described "bookworm" she nevertheless learned the finer points of several different sports so she could cheer on her sons with fierce loyalty. Her bond with her husband Jeff was unbreakable, and her daily phone calls with her mother and Faith were often short, but rarely missed. She will live on in the hearts of so many who cared deeply for her. Services at Temple Shir Tikva, 141 Boston Post Rd. (Rte 20), Wayland on Sunday, April 10 at 2:00pm. Burial in Beit Olam East Cemetery, 42 Concord Rd., Wayland. Shiva times are as follows: Immediately following the burial through 9pm, and Monday & Tuesday at the home of Irwin & Louise Stokar. Wednesday at the John Matarese Funeral Home in Ashland from 3pm to 7pm. Thursday and Friday until 4pm at the home of Irwin & Louise Stokar. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in honor of Elka's love of reading to The Friends of the Ashland Public Library, 66 Front Street, Ashland, MA 01721. My deepest condolences to the Troutman family. I had the pleasure of taking care of Elka as her nurse for a couple of weeks, and treasure the conversations we had. We spoke of the meaning of life, and within thirty minutes of meeting her, she told me about the wonderful support she has received from her loving community. She spoke of the importance of family and her involvement in local activities. She was an incredibly special person, and I send my best wishes and prayers to Jeff and her young boys.

Jeff, Jake and Josh,

I knew Elka from JCC Clearbrook, summer reading , book club, x-country & track with the boys. Jeff -we met briefly a couple of times at the Ashland 5K -Elka always forwarded photos that you took -she was so thoughtful.

She wasn't someone I saw all that often, but when I did -it was like we continued a conversation right where we left off. She was so funny, direct, honest, caring & full of great Yiddish expressions. I know there are no words that can fill the place for you of such a loving wife & mother, but thank you for letting us be a part of such a moving tribute on Sunday. Our community will continue to be here for you even as the days pass.

To Louise, Irwin, Ellen, Shari, Faith,
There are no words to describe this great loss. Elka is in all my adolescent memories...taking the T everyday in snow or shine to Lubavitch, copying from her notes during class because she wrote as fast as the teacher spoke, going to movies, davening in shul together, going to the library every Friday, and all those shabboses in your home where we talked for hours about what girls talk about.
Elka had a great sense of humor and it was fun to be with her because she laughed so easily and readily.
I pray for all who are mourning her loss to find comfort in the good she did and to know that she lives on through her offspring.
With love and great sadness,
Sandy

I received numerous emails from Elka during my daughter's early school years as she organized activities and colaborative opportunities for all parents. Elka was an excellent woman that will be missed by all, however, she will always be remembered! Your family has been in our thoughts and prayers. The Tang family.

It was with dismay and pain that we heard of Elkie's passing. We well remember her when she lived down the street from us in Newton and what a wonderful and loving daughter and aunt she was. She will be fondly remembered. Baruch Dayan Ha'Emet.

Dear Elka's family,
Elka has helped me so much through all her advice, calm demeanor, and just friendship when I needed her most. I had the same cancer as Elka and had to go through the same operation as Elka. She provided me with so much guidance and love to help me get through it, I shall forever remember her and I am so very grateful I got to know such a wonderful, beautiful, inspirational person. Rest now my friend.

We went back 30+ years. I do not recall when exactly we met. It was when Elka was at McGill in Montreal. We stayed in touch all these years. Celebrating the good and helping with the, not so good.

Elka was always caring about others. When she lived at Harvard (I think) and called a dentist on Shabat to have them look at my tooth (needed root canal). Organizing for me to play with Jeff and his friends before their wedding. Yearly getting Purim and Rosh Hashana greetings.

I will greatly miss you my friend.

Rest in peace my dear friend.

Elka, my kids preschool days were shaped my you. I can honestly say I thought you were super mom. You seemed to know everything your boys were thinking, what they needed and how to organize the school around it. I was nervous when you were present only at the thought I wouldn't measure up. I can't ever express my sorrow to your boys that I knew were your calling. I know you will continue to guide them and raise them to be everything you ever wanted them to be.

I met Elka just once when I worked at the preschool library. But I have to convey this: my now third-grade-daughter was never a big reader. She participated in the Ashland Library summer program reluctantly, but last summer, something finally ignited. During previous years it was all about the prizes, and that finally brought her to a place where reading became the magical world that it should be. She's now a voracious reader. Jeffrey, your wife made a huge difference in this community, and touched kids and families that she never even knew. We're all feeling her loss and are praying for your family. Sending our sympathies.

Sad news travels far.. I am so very sad to hear of Elka's passing. I knew Elka from my time working at the JCC. She was an unstoppable force, a fierce mommy warrior, a dedicated parent representative Bd a kind hearted, friend to all. I feel blessed to have known her. I am especially saddened because I remember how devoted and adoring she was of her amazing boys and always spoke highly of her husband and best friend, Jeff. RIP Elka.

April 7, 2016

I loved her fighting spirit. She was not willing to give in to what she was fighting. She will be deeply missed. We loved her.
