George Mitchell Obituary

SUMMERFIELD, Fla. George D. Mitchell, Jr., 77, a resident of Florida for 20 years, and a former 30-year resident of Framingham, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in Tuscany Hospice House in Florida. He was the husband of 57 years of June T. (Fougere) Mitchell of Summerfield. Born in Omaha, Neb., he was the son of the late George D. and Bernice (Caylor) Mitchell. A graduate of Natick High School, where he was a football captain, Mr. Mitchell attended Tilton Prep, before serving honorably as a quartermaster second class aboard the USS Purdy (DD-734). His naval service spanned four years from 1951 to 1955. Following his honorable discharge at the conclusion of the Korean War, Mr. Mitchell graduated from Northeastern University and began his career in sales. He worked for more than 30 years for SICO, Inc., and travelled the country marketing school equipment, until retiring in 1990. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus in Framingham. In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Lynn Curran and her husband, Brian, of Mashpee, George Delbert Mitchell III of Ocklawaha, Fla., Marie Randolph and her husband, Phillip, of Lady Lake, Fla., and John Mitchell and his wife, Joan, of Franklin; 10 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren, and his siblings, Jack Mitchell of Nevada, Michael Mitchell, Patrick Mitchell, Maria Mitchell, Kathy Serwe and Sharon Fortini, all of California. He was the brother of the late Robert Mitchell. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m., in St. George's Church, 74 School St., Saxonville (Framingham). Burial will follow with military honors in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours are Sunday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Boyle Brothers Funeral Home, 173 Union Ave., Framingham. Memorial gifts in George's name may be made to Eternal Word Television Network, 5817 Old Leeds Road, Irondale, AL, 35210.

Mr. Mitchell,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USN during the Korean War as a "Tin Can Sailor" aboard the destroyer USS Purdy. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
