Stephen Kadlik Obituary

Stephen F. Stubby Kadlik, III, 60, died peacefully and comfortably at his home in Medway with his beloved wife Gail at his side on Friday, December 9, 2016 following a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Natick on October 10, 1956 the son of the late Stephen F. Kadlik, Jr. and Jean Louise (Marchetti) Kadlik. Stubby was the loving husband of Gail S. (Garland) Kadlik of Medway. Devoted father of Richard Stephen Kadlik and his fiance Jennifer Emerson of Foxborough and Cory James Kadlik of Medway. Cherished grandfather of Alaina Jane Kadlik who was the love of his life. Brother of Richard J. Kadlik and Patricia A. Kadlik both of Cochituate and the late Deborah J. Koulalis. Brother-in-law of Bonnie and Mark Montana of Utica, NY; Patrick Garland of Yarmouth; Terry and Cathy Garland of Holliston and Colleen and Charlie Hayes of Beekman, NY. Also survived by four nieces, seven nephews, four great-nephews and two great-great nephews. Stubby has been a resident of Medway for the past 20 years and spent most of his life in Cochituate. He graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1974. Stubby began a wonderful and fulfilling career with the Town of Wayland that expanded over 42 years and on June 11, 2016 the new Public Works Facility in Wayland was dedicated as the Stephen STUBBY Kadlik Facility in recognition of his 42 years of dedicated service to the residents of the Town of Wayland. He retired as the DPW Director on October 11, 2016 due to his illness. As a young man just graduating from high school, he was hired full time to the Park and Recreation Department in 1974. In November 1980, he transferred to the Highway Department and in December 1989 was promoted to Working Foreman. In 1995, he was named to a General Foreman position, March of 2002 saw Stubby being name the Director of Highway Operations and then in 2009 appointed to DPW Highway/ Transfer Station Superintendent. August of 2014 found Stubby being named the DPW Director for the Town of Wayland, a position that no doubt he earned through his hard work and indisputable for his love of the town he grew up in. Stubby also served the town from October 1974 until July 2007 as a Wayland Call Fire Fighter which he was very proud of. He also delighted in time spent at the Cochituate ball field and the softball league that he managed for many years with his friends and the bowling league at Fairway. Stubbys family and friends were the most important aspect and center of his life and with the addition of his new granddaughter Alaina, he saw himself in a new role as a Grampy. He loved fishing, especially deep sea fishing trips with his family as well as moments captured at the boat dock at Lake Cochituate. He enjoyed vacations with Gail and the boys and loved the summers on Loon Harbor in Wolfeboro, NH. He was a true New England sports fan and supported the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and the Celtics as well as NASCAR. Stubby was also associated, for 18 years, as a part-time bartender for the Dudley Chat. He was a member of the Franklin Elks and always had a great smile and hello for everyone that he met on his journey in life. Stubby touched the hearts and souls of his family, friends, business associated and everyone who had the great honor to know him. He will be forever missed and remembered. Visitations will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte. 30), Cochituate Village, Wayland. Family and friends are requested to go directly to Good Shepherd Parish at Saint Zepherins Church, 99 Main Street (Rte. 27), Cochituate Village, Wayland on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 for his Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in the Kadlik family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Cochituate. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, Stubby be remembered with donations to the Stephen F. Stubby Kadlik, III Fund, c/o John C. Bryant Funeral Home which will benefit DPW employees for continuing education and for the advancement of cannabis research for cancer healing for those afflicted with all stages of cancer. As a fellow member of the class of 74' and floor scrubber at all the schools in Wayland, I will always remember my times with Stubba. Not sure when his name changed to the more eloquent "Stubby" but either way he was a great friend. Always a smile and always willing to help. He used to pick me up on West Plain Street and we would discuss the usual things teenage boys would talk about on our drive to Wayland High to tackle the next job. Whether cleaning Happy Hollow or moving on to Loker. Time passes so fast. Reach out to old friends. Keep family close. Gail and family, so sorry for your loss. Try to keep the good times in your memories. That's how I remember Stubba.

As a member of the WHS Class of '74, I knew Steve but only slightly -- for instance, I was unaware of his nickname Stubby -- but I wanted to leave my condolences and pay tribute to Steve's many years of service to the town of Wayland, not only in his rise in rank at Park & Rec and at the DPW but also in his capacity as an on-call volunteer with WFD. Even his service at the Chat!
I'm sorry for the family's loss -- it sounds like a lifetime of happiness in the extended family tree.
However a major reason as well for my comments here is that I've never seen him look better, or happier. The warmth in his face tells of a good life and fulfillment and happiness. And isn't that really all any of us could ask for.
My sympathy on your loss. I hope the entire WHS football team turns out for a grand send-off. R.I.P. Steve

Condolences to the Kadlik/Koulalis family on the loss of their beloved Steve "Stubby". He was a wonderful human being and was always quick with a joke or to lend a hand to a friend. He was loved by many and will be missed. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to know him through his sisters Debbie and Patty. Although it's been years since I last saw him I will take the fond memories of all the times at his house, at Mel's and of course the "Chateau de Dudley". Rest in Peace Stubby. You were one of the best!

Gail, Cory, and Ricky:
I am stunned and saddened by the loss of Stubby. He certainly fought a good fight. Although it was so many years ago that I interacted with him, I will always remember him for the kind gentleman that he was. I hope that your happy memories of him will comfort you during this heart wrenching time.

Sending hugs, prayers and understanding,

I can still hear Stubby's voice calling to my husband in the most unexpected places!!! A balcony of a motel in Aruba!!! He called, "Hey, Jonesy, is that you up there?!""" What a riot. We had such a great time with Stubby, Gail, and the boys. One I will never forget!!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family.

To the Kadlik Family:

I was very saddened to learn of Stubby's sudden and untimely passing. As a former and now retired Wayland Public Safety Dispatcher, I interacted with Him on a regular basis during such as as road closures and severe weather events. He was always very professional and made sure our requests were acted upon in a professional and prompt manner. I was glad when He was promoted to the position of Director of Public Works, an assignment He took very seriously. My deep and sincere condolences to your Family. May You all find the strength to guide you throught this difficult time.
