William Sutton Obituary

William R. Sutton, 78, of Milford, formerly of Hopedale, died Sat. Feb. 15, 2014 after a period of declining health in the Blaire House of Worcester. He was the husband of Lorraine A. (Gregoire) Sutton. Mr. Sutton was employed as a Baker for Continental Bakery Co. in Natick for 23 years until his retirement in 1993. Mr. Sutton was born March 16, 1935 in Holyoke, the son of the late Stephen J. and Catherine C. (Costello) Sutton. He was a graduate of Springfield Vocational High, Class of 1953. Mr. Sutton also attended Cambridge School of Business in Newton and Lee Institute in Brookline. Mr. Sutton was an eight year veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserves. He served on active duty during the Korean War with the 7th Fleet aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Sproston DDE 577 stationed at Pearl Harbor, Oahu. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged with the rank of Petty Officer. Mr. & Mrs. Sutton observed their 55th wedding anniversary on July 12, 2013. Mr. Sutton was a member of the Bakery and Confectionary Workers Union Local #348. He was also a member of the Powers Post #59 American Legion in Milford, Milford Senior Center, and the A.A.R.P. Mr. Sutton was a former Communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Hopedale and was active in the churchs ministries. Besides being a Eucharist Minister, he was a former CCD teacher, Reader of the Word and Usher for more than 35 years in Hopedale. Since 2006, Mr. Sutton was a member of and active in the ministries of St. Marys Church in Milford. All his life Mr. Sutton was an avid boxing fan. In his youth he boxed amateur and Golden Gloves. He was the Pacific Coast Navy Lightweight Champion later turning professional, fighting under the ring name of Irish Billy Kay until retiring undefeated in 1957. He was a Friend of Bill W. for over 35 years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Sutton is survived by five sons; Michael G. and his wife Jo-Anne Sutton of Milford, Greg T. and his wife Michelle Sutton of Milford, Daniel W. Sutton of Milford,, William S. and his wife Mary Sutton of Woonsocket, RI, Robert D. and his wife Amy Sutton of East Douglas; one daughter Cammie A. and her husband Michael Chasey of Milford; 2 grandsons; William and Kevin ; 9 granddaughters; Althea, Angela, Jamie, Danielle, Jessica, Maegan, Erin , Rachel and Lauren , 3 great grandsons, two brothers-in-law, Peter Ferrelli of Holliston and David Gregoire of Milford and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by one brother Stephen J. Sutton Jr. and two sisters Lois Ferrelli and Mildred Bigda and one step-brother Robert Keene. Visiting hours will be held Fri. Feb. 21, 2014 from 5-8 PM in the BUMA SARGEANT FUNERAL HOME, 42 Congress St., Milford. Funeral Services with Full Military Honors will be held on Sat. Feb. 22, 2014 at 12 noon from the Buma sargeant funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 PM in St. Marys Church, 19 Winter St., Milford. Interment will follow in the Hopedale Village Cemetery, Mendon St. (Rte. 16), Hopedale. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary of the Assumption, c/o Beautification Fund, 19 Winter St. Milford, MA 01757. www.bumafuneralhome.com
