TROY - It is with tremendous sadness and heavy hearts that we (the Brumfield, Casto, Wigdahl and Young families) share the death of our beloved son Alec Matthew Casto age 29. Alec passed away unexpectedly at his residence in Troy, Ohio on July 7, 2025.
Alec was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 7, 1996. Alec was preceded in death by his baby brother Luke Casto, grandparents George & Goldie Brumfield, cousin Dawson Brumfield, uncle David Brumfield, great uncle Harold Brumfield, cousin Jennifer Brumfield, grandmother Helen Casto, grandfather Robert Seas and step grandfather Howard Wigdahl.
Alec is survived by his mom Jill (Brumfield) Wigdahl & stepdad Erick Wigdahl of Shelby County; dad Nathan Casto & stepmom Michelle (Young) Casto of Troy. He is also survived by his younger brother Owen Casto; stepbrother, Nolan Scott; stepsister, Andrea Wigdahl; his Papaw Clifton Brumfield of Troy; his Papaw Mike Casto & Mimi Donna Casto of Piqua; great grandmother Gigi Valerie Seas of Piqua; and step grandparents Don and Nana Deanna Young. Alec was very fortunate to have a large family and as a result he is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Alec would want a special mention made of his two cousins that he grew up with and spent most of his summers with; Storm and Dalton, they weren't just his cousins but also his best friends. Alec is also survived by his loving girlfriend Crystal whom he cared deeply about and loved very much.
Alec was a 2014 graduate of Houston High School and UVCC. Alec was involved in FFA, played baseball, soccer and threw the shot put in track. Alec was an active member of the Riverside community and was so happy that he found such an amazing place where he belonged. Alec really enjoyed participating in sports through Riverside especially playing softball, he loved playing first base and hitting dingers and his family loved watching him play. Alec also liked lifting heavy weights and participated in The Special Olympics at OSU in 2023 where he won 3 gold medals in his weight division. He was a big sports fan and rooted for the Reds and Bengals no matter how bad they were and really enjoyed watching their games and discussing the players and plays with others. In Alec's spare time he often spent hours listening to music and rocking out on the couch, from a very young age he would often rock out. Alec had an exceptional memory regarding music, history and sports facts and knew really cool and obscure facts that most people didn't know and would oftentimes impress people with his extensive knowledge in those subjects. Alec filled his days by going on day trips with his ADS group which he called his second family, and he loved whenever they had music trivia, went bowling or went to concerts. He was really looking forward to their big yearly getaway trip coming up and had already bag packed his bag in anticipation of going. Alec had a large group of friends and no matter where he went, he always knew someone and would go out of his way to talk to them and let them know he was glad to see them. Alec never knew a stranger, was very friendly and lived in the moment and tried to always be positive even throughout all of his struggles. And during those difficult times in life when things became too overwhelming, he would go to Safehaven and hang out with his buddies there. Safehaven was a special place for Alec
and he would often tell others that the love and support he received there saved his life. Alec was a very special young man who had a huge heart and truly cared about others even more than he did himself. He would help anyone out and would give away his last dime if they needed it and also would give them a place to stay for the night if they had nowhere to go. Alec never had a bad thing to say about anyone and always wanted the best for everyone. Alec was a gentle soul whose life ended way too soon and for those of us that knew him we know that he will never be forgotten. He was a unique individual whose kindness and love will live on through others and he will be missed every single day. As for Alec's final wishes, he made his wishes known to us because our family (like so many others) experienced several losses over the last 5 years so we had had numerous discussions regarding final wishes in front of Alec and he (at the young age of 29) said he wanted to be buried with his baby brother and have a gathering of remembrance where all his family and friends could congregate to say goodbye. We will be honoring those wishes. Alec wasn't religious in the traditional sense, but he believed in God, the Bible, and enjoyed going to church and he especially enjoyed the praise and worship part of service where he would enthusiastically sing, clap and praise. Our family takes great comfort in the following scripture Ecclesiastes 12:7, …the spirit returns to God who gave it. He is with God now. A gathering for all of Alec's friends and family will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at Miami Memorial Park with Pastor Kris Geise officiating. His final internment and resting place will be at Miami Memorial Park in Covington, Ohio where he will be buried near his brother Luke Casto, Grandma Helen and Grandpa Gene Casto. Anyone wishing to honor Alec's life is encouraged to donate to Riverside/ Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities of Troy, Ohio or Safe Haven of Piqua Ohio. Cards and condolences for the family can be sent to P. O. Box 165 Piqua, Ohio 45356.
