FLETCHER - Barbara Jean (Tobias) Mitchell, age 87, of Fletcher, OH, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024, at Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit.
She was born on January 7, 1937, in Casstown, OH, to the late Clarence J. (Toby) and Frances Elizabeth (Ross) Tobias. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters and their husbands, Mary Jane (Don) Brown and Emma Louise (Arnold) Clendenen.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 64 years, Maynard Mitchell, whom she married on July 16, 1960. She is survived by son Brian (Laurie) Mitchell of Maumee, OH; daughter Kimberly (Rusty) Snodgrass of Troy, OH; and son Jonathan (Amberly) Mitchell of New Carlisle, OH; 14 grandchildren Brianna Mitchell, Scott, Mitchell, Ross Snodgrass and family, Brynne Snodgrass, Lindi Snodgrass, Samantha Mitchell, Milo Mitchell, Ulyana Mitchell, Ilia Mitchell, Slava Mitchell, Anastasia Mitchell, Olga Mitchell, Hudson Mitchell, and Piper Mitchell; one great granddaughter; and sixteen nieces and nephews.
Barbara was a 1955 graduate of Miami Central. She attended Bowling Green State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1959. Barbara taught business classes at Newton Local School District from 1959-1966 and at Covington Exempted Village School District in 1966-67. From 1980-1992, Barbara managed the Dinner Bell Employees Federal Credit Union in Troy, OH. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in Troy. At various times over the years, she was a VBS leader and teacher, Sunday School teacher, treasurer, secretary, and served on many committees at the church. Barbara also volunteered at the Bethany Center and Soup Kitchen in Piqua, OH, for many years. While she enjoyed all of these things, she especially enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren in all of their sports and activities through the years. She was an avid sports fan and could always be found in the stands, in a seat, or on the sidelines at whatever they were doing.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Suber, Shively & Vernon Funeral Home, Fletcher, Ohio.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Union Baptist Church, 1833 E Peterson Rd Troy, OH 45373, with Rev. William Berkheiser officiating. Burial will follow in Fletcher Cemetery.
