COVINGTON, KY -- Carl Marion Thomas passed away peacefully January 29, 2022 at the age of 93 at Rosedale Green in Covington, Kentucky. He was born December 20, 1928 in Eldorado, Ohio to the late Carl C. and Martha (Ashworth) Thomas. He married Catherine "Katie" Winkler September 4, 1954 in Eaton; and she survives.
Other survivors include three children, Terry Glennon of Los Angeles, California, David (Lisa) Thomas of Edgewood, Kentucky; Carla (Steve) Isaacs of Charlottesville, Virginia; six grandchildren, Brian (Jill) Glennon of Los Angeles, California; Mark (Zoey) Glennon of Laguna Niguel, California, Brittany (Jason) Taylor of Lancaster, Kentucky, Brandon Thomas of Santa Cruz, California, Brent and Bryany Isaacs of Charlottesville, Virginia; seven great grandchildren, Riley, Kaitlyn, and Fiona Glennon of Los Angeles, California, Landon and Grayson Taylor of Lancaster, Kentucky, Kelsey and Erin Glennon of Laguna Niguel, California; his dear sister, Carolyn (Robert) Shields of Sharps Chapel, Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl C. and Martha (nee Ashworth) Thomas and a brother, John (Marilyn) Thomas.
The family moved to Eaton, Ohio where he graduated from Dixon Israel High School in 1946. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1950 with a BS Business degree. Carl was drafted to the US Army after college graduation, serving at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky, as Corporal and Company Clerk, during the Korean Conflict. Discharged in 1952 he began working at McCall's printing company, Dayton, Ohio. There he met Katie Winkler, his loving wife of 67 years. They were married in September 1954 and lived in Eaton, Ohio. Carl and family were active members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Eaton. He taught the High School Sunday school class from the time he came back from the army until 1973. He also led many of the church's youth activities. In 1973 the family moved to Piqua, Ohio, where Carl worked for the Orr Felt Company, retiring as CFO in 1994. He then worked part time for Murray, Wells, Wendeln, and Robinson CPA group until 2010. Carl and Katie moved to Northern Kentucky to be closer to family in 2018. Carl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a caring son, brother, uncle, good friend, mentor and neighbor. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Church, Piqua, Ohio. He enjoyed music, tennis, racquet ball, and gardening. He volunteered his strong tenor voice to the church choir for many years. He sang solos for multiple weddings, church services, and social events. Carl and Katie were avid travelers visiting all seven continents and all 50 United States. He and Katie served as AAA Bus Tour guides several times. He was a past member of the Piqua Rotary Club, Piqua YMCA, and the Financial Executive Institute. Carl believed in "giving back" and donated his time to church committees and organizations. He served on the Child Welfare Board, Preble County, OH. He was past Chairman of CROP Walk and served on the board of the Rehabilitation Center for Neurological Development and Nicholas School, Piqua, Ohio. Carl was a true and loving patriarch of our family and will be greatly missed.
A service to honor his life will begin at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Keith Gebhart officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions, in Carl's name, may be made to Rehabilitation Center for Neurological Development, 1306 Garbry Rd, Piqua, OH, 45356 or St. Paul's
