URBANA - Joshua Loyal Scully was a quiet, caring, and humble person who passed away peacefully at home August 29, 2023.
He loved and will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and many students. He taught science and chemistry and coached hockey, cross country, and track. He will be missed by former students at Edison State CC, Meadow Montessori, and Green Hills Prep School and multiple schools and colleges in Michigan, Ohio, and North Carolina. He kindly coached both champion runners and struggling students. He wrote long letters of recommendation and encouraged many students in their education and athletics. He took students to Ireland in the summer and New England in the winter. He was a published researcher, author, and online running coach. He had a PhD in biochemistry and a BS in Biology from WSU Michigan, and a postdoc and teaching degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
He loved to read, write, play music, explore and exercise. He followed all the Detroit sports teams and MSU. He rode his bike around the entire mitten of Michigan. He was an iron man and a triathlete. He spoke Gaelic, practiced archery, drove a Jeep, snowshoed, played hockey, proudly studied the history of Ireland and Newfoundland, the role of physics in the universe, and made his own beer. He loved bulldogs and played multiple musical instruments. Many an evening, he could be found on the front porch playing reels on his fiddle. He visited pubs in Newfoundland, England and Ireland, taking in the local gab and music. He read up on many topics from physics, and economics, to Native American creation stories, spirituality, and Buddhism. He lived a very full life that cannot be summed up in just a few words.
He especially loved his family, mother, Barbara, his son Quinlan Scully (mother Missy), partner, Arlene Hawkins, sister, Shannon (Charlie), his in-laws, cousins, friends and stepchildren: Ian, Derek, Mary, and grandchildren: Maddy, Quinnie, Daphne and Paxton. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Scully in February of 2023.
Joshua's service will be private; he would be honored if you would raise a pint for a life well-lived and toast, 'Slainte' for family and friends. His ashes will be interred at Scotch Settlement in Almont, MI. His spirit will be in the particles and forces of love and positive energy surrounding his family and friends and the places he holds dear.
