Clementine Szymanski Obituary

Clementine A. Szymanski, 102, of Port Austin, passed away, after a long and beautiful life, peacefully on Sept. 19, 2018, at her daughter's home in Midland. She was born Klementyna Miller on Holy Thursday, April 20, 1916, to the late John and Lucia (Rumptz) Miller in Paris Township. After the death of her mother in 1924, she lived at the St. Albertus Orphanage in Detroit. She was raised by the Felician Sisters until her graduation in 1932. It was at that time she was introduced to Stanley and Theresa (Hessling) Lemanski who were moving to Minden City with a newly adopted child and needed a "mother's helper." She entered into a new family, was treated as a daughter and helped to care for Marie (Pionk) and Clara (Renner). She lived there until Nov. 11, 1939, when she married, Frank Szymanski at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville, Michigan. Together they farmed in Hume Township. He preceded her in death on July 13, 1993. Clementine was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin and was in St. Teresa's Circle for many years. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, Frank. Clementine enjoyed gardening and jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Clementine is survived by her sons Paul Szymanski (Sandy McLellan) of Dayton, Ohio; Richard (Josie) Szymanski and Tom (Frances) Szymanski, all of Port Austin; her daughter Elizabeth Szymanski (Paul Wenglikowski) of Midland; daughter-in-law, Marge Szymanski of Port Austin; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; along with her nieces and nephews; three Godchildren; Albin Murawski Jr. of Port Austin, Robert Miller of Detroit and Joyce Pionk Scott of Virginia and by Clara Renner. She was preceded in death by her son George Szymanski; her brothers Peter, Walter, Frank, Julius and Ira; and her sisters Bertha Messing and Irene Miller. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at St. Michael Catholic Church (Annunciation of the Lord Parish) in Port Austin with Fr. Craig Carolan. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. The family would like to thank Pam Hill for her compassionate care of Clem. Memorials may be offered to the Larkin Township First Responders or to the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph in Detroit (https://www.thecapuchins.org/donate) Condolences can be shared at www.macalpinefuneralhome.com

Dear Liz and family,
My heart hurt to hear the news of Aunt Clem's passing, - but it was also filled with joy in the full and loving life that she had lived. I was so fortunate to have the special connection as god-daughter. Godparents were chosen and generally alternated with the two sides of the family -- and when I was born - it would/should have fallen to my mom's sister, Clara, -- but my mom chose Clem instead. I will always cherish the family get-togethers for Baptisms, First Communions, Weddings, and Polka dances we shared! I have fun and endearing memories of staying at her home in Port Austin as a little girl, - visiting the barn, playing with kittens, waking up way to early several times in the wee early morning because I thought Aunt Clem was calling many times "JOYCE -- Time to Get UP and Do your CHORES!!!" - only to find out that it was GEORGE she was calling for. (lucky me - I got to go back to bed!) I especially LOVE the relationship that Liz shared with her mom -- so endearing, devoted, and caring -- to her last breath. That truly is a gift from God.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Much Love, Joyce (Pionk) Scott, Altavista, VA
