Earl Robert Woike, 93, of Middletown, CT and recently of Lee, MA, husband of the late Esther (Augeri) Woike, passed away swiftly and peacefully on October 6, 2022 at his home in the care of his daughters and hospice. Born in Middletown CT, he was the son of the late Emil and Anna (Appel) Woike. Earl grew up in Cromwell and then lived in Middletown, where he raised his family. In 2018, he moved from Heritage Commons in Middletown to the Berkshires in MA to be closer to his daughter Barbara as his health declined.
He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Middletown. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving on submarines including the Cod during the Korean conflict. He was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a toolmaker until he retired.
Bringing Earl the most joy in his life was his family. He loved helping people and one of the biggest ways was donating gallons of blood to the Red Cross. Earl enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and his beagles and was known for his bread and pie making, as well as his many German sauerbraten, spaghetti, and the wild game dinners benefiting the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church. In his later years, he developed a hobby propagating African violets and delighted in sharing his bounty with those who saw to his care. Earl is survived by two daughters Linda Woike of Dorchester, NH and Barbara Woike and son-in-law Jim McNamara of Stockbridge, MA; a sister Elsie Becker of Glastonbury; two grandchildren Darryl Crenshaw and Natasha Crenshaw; a great-granddaughter Ayana Crenshaw; his former son-in-law Charles Crenshaw of Bloomfield and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Reynolds "Rinie" Woike and three sisters, Gertrude Wyer, Ruth Johnson and Evelyn Barr. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 300 Washington Street, Middletown. Burial will follow in Middlefield Cemetery, with full military honors.
