Edith LaPaugh Obituary

Edith Intravaia LaPaugh, 90, a lifelong resident of Middletown, passed away on July 7, 2013 at Apple Rehab in Cromwell. She is the daughter of the late Sebastiano and Josephine Intravaia and was married to the late Ralph L. LaPaugh.
Edith graduated from Middletown High School and The Teachers College of Connecticut, now Central Connecticut State University. Her first teaching position was at Long Lane School for Girls. After an 11 year hiatus to raise her two girls, she returned to full-time teaching in the Middletown school system, first at Woodrow Wilson Middle School, then at Keigwin School. She was a dedicated teacher and served for several years as chair of the English Department. She further served the children of Middletown through her work as an officer of the Ruth E. Lawrence Fund. In the little spare time teaching and family allowed, she was a avid gardener and greatly enjoyed the Connecticut shore.
She will be fondly remembered as a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Mother of the late Shelley LaPaugh, Edith is survived by her daughter Andrea LaPaugh and spouse Michael Lipkowitz, grandchildren Steven and Joanne, sisters Lucy Spada and Helen Campisi, stepchildren Marjorie Varrato and Ralph A. LaPaugh and their spouses and children, and several nieces and nephews.
A visiting hour will be held on Monday July 15, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 South Main Street, Middletown, Ct., followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Sebastian Church, 155 Washington Street, Middletown, Ct. Burial will be in Indian Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mrs. LaPaugh was my 6th grade English teacher at Keigwin. She also gave me my first detention. She was tough, but fair. To this day, I think of her every time I write a comma, or see an incorrect supermarket sign saying "12 items or less".

I am a former student of Mrs. Lapaugh's from Woodrow Wilson in the 70's. I remember well her reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens to the class. She had a captive audience and it peaked my interest in reading. She was a fine teacher. My deepest condolences to the family.

I was in Mrs. LaPaugh's 7th grade classroom at Woodrow Wilson, then junior high when the principal's voice came over the intercom and we all were told of JFK's assassination.
