George Neumann Obituary

NEUMANN, GEORGE C. George C. Neumann, 88, of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, died on Friday, April 4, 2014, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was born on March 29, 1926 in New Britain, Connecticut. He attended New Britain High School, Wesleyan University, Princeton University and Harvard Business School. On February 5, 1955, he married Diana L. (Martell) Neumann, and together they had two children: Douglas David Neumann and his wife, Kathleen (Flynn) Neumann of Coldwater Creek, Connnecticut, and Bruce Bradford Neumann of Wyonna, New Jersey. Also survived by his siblings Frederick Neumann of Illinois and Marjorie Gosling of Perth, Australia; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was the brother of the late Robert Neumann, who had resided in Troy, Ohio. He moved to Attleboro Falls in 1986 and was a former resident of Durham, Connecticut. George worked as a New York City based business executive at various companies, including Johnson and Johnson, Canada Dry and Good Humor. He was a noted expert on the subjects of antiques and colonial military accoutrements and authored several books and periodicals on those topics. In 1979 George sold his extensive private collection of Revolutionary War weapons and artifacts to the National Park Service. Portions of The George C. Neumann Collection are on display at Valley Forge National Historical Park in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, while much of it is preserved in museum vaults. George was a founding member of the Brigade of the American Revolution and Third New Jersey Regiment historical reenacting organizations. A man of principle, he was dedicated to God, his country, and his family. He served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He was committed to the preservation of the history of America with a focused interest on the ideals of the Founding Fathers. He was a stalwart citizen of the community in which he lived and a man whose life was centered around his family and friends. Visitation has been respectfully omitted. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a Memorial Service celebrating his life at the First Baptist Church of North Attelboro, Park Street, North Attleboro, MA on Saturday, MAY 31, 2014 at 1:00 PM. I bought my first George Neumann book in 1978 and I was hooked on the American Revolution and the related history and with extensive family research found that I had 8 great great grandfathers in the American Revolution and then I started collecting 18th century everything including a great many muskets. Prior to my many purchases over the years I always sought out George Neumann's seal of approval. He was a great American, great historian and most impotrtantly a great person who enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge with everyone without restriction. He will be greatly missed !
