John 'Jack' Custy, 86, beloved father, grandfather & great-grandfather, passed peacefully on Tuesday, June 18 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. John was born on August 27, 1926 in Middletown, CT to the late John & Julia Custy and was a lifelong resident of Portland. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Lastrina Custy, the love of his life. John attended Portland schools and graduated from Ward School of Electronics after serving in the U. S. Army Air Corps in Germany. He worked for many years at Wannerstroms and later retired from the foundry at Pratt & Whitney. He was a devout catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Church in Portland. John was a man of many talents and lived life to its fullest. He was a master woodworker and gardener and loved to travel especially to his beloved Ireland. He so loved his family and cherished every minute with them. He will be missed by his loving family, Patricia & Timothy Maher, John Custy & Mark DelFranco, James & Kathleen Custy, Christine & Stephen Crouch, Peter Custy, Kathleen & Michael Hamilton; grandchildren Kelly & Shaun Maher, Kate Custy Adams & husband Timothy Adams, Patrick Custy, Ryan & Joel Crouch, Mary Beth & Amanda Hamilton; great-grandchildren Brooke, Tristan , Patrick, & Bridget Adams; dear friends Fred & Erin Martinelli. He leaves many dear nieces and nephews and extended family. In addition to his beloved wife & parents, John was predeceased by his brother & sister, Amenia & William Burkle and several sisters and brothers- in- laws.
A special thanks to the staff at St. Francis Hospital on 8-7 and ICU for their wonderful and compassionate care; especially Lynda Everett, a special family friend and nurse at St. Francis.
The family will receive relatives & friends from 4:30-8:00 on Friday, June 21 at the Portland Memorial Funeral Home on Main Street Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday , June 22 at St. Mary's Church, Freestone Avenue, Portland. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Portland In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy High School or Xavier High School's scholarship funds. I had the pleasure of meeting and caring for Mr. Custy in the ED. So sorry to hear of his passing. I'll have a drink in his honor the next time I venture to the winchester! My thoughts are with your family, he was blessed to have such wonderful and devoted loved ones by his side.
