John Kingston Obituary

Lt. Col. (ret.) John "Jack" Kingston, Jr., 72, of Tariffville, beloved husband of Jayne (Christian) Kingston, passed away at home on Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2010). Son of the late John and Ruth (Hopkinson) Kingston, Jack was born in Newton, Mass. on May 22, 1938. Jack received his bachelors degree from Texas A&M University in 1960, and a series of masters degrees through the U.S. Army and University of Hartford. A veteran of the Korean conflict, Jack honorably served in the Army under his Texas A&M commission following his graduation, and then in the Army Reserve Corps, for a combined 26 years of service. He served as a public school mathematics teacher in Connecticut, with his last 30 years of service in West Hartford. Jack's love of God, country, family, and people was known to all who encountered him. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Tariffville, and of the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M. Jack counted among his passions a love of history and genealogy, and the Boston Red Sox, which he followed devotedly throughout his life, including his trip to St. Louis for the clinching game of the 2004 World Series. Among his many legacies, both the Sword & Spoon Foundation and SixSeeds (www.sixseeds.tv) were founded to advance Jack's love of all things good and true, and the founding of each were dedicated to Jack. Jack leaves three sons, John Kingston, III and his wife, Jean, of Winchester, Mass.; James Jason Kingston of Medford, Mass.; and Joel Christian Kingston and his wife, Bridget, of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Helen Kingston of Winchester, Mass.; two sisters, Sally Baum and her husband, Roy, of Sturbridge, Mass.; and Priscilla Rollins of Mashpee, Mass.; his grandchildren Caitlin, Annalise, Christopher, James, William, and Abigail; and many nieces and nephews. He resided in East Hampton before moving to Bloomfield, and has resided in Tariffville for the last 16 years. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 11 Church St. in Tariffville, with military honors to follow at the church. Burial will follow at the Kingston family burial site at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Southbridge, Mass. There will be no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be directed to Trinity Episcopal Church, 11 Church St., Tariffville, CT 06081. Dear Jayne and Family, So very sad to hear of Jacks passing. He was a wonderful man and a great Classmate at A&M. It was great that the two of you were able to attend our 50th Class Reunion at A&M this past April. I had several brief chances to speak to Jack, We relived some old memories from our days in the Jocks. Jack was a very active leader among our guys in the Armor companies at A&M. Course we referred to our units as the Cavalry, and we got our demerits for wearing Crossed Sabres brass on every occassion we could. Our spirit among those of us in the Jocks was evident at the Reunion.
Jack was always a leader in our outfit. He carried that spirit forward in his time in the service during the VietNam era. And it stayed with him in his later business career. He was a family man and will be dearly missed by you and your children.
Judy and I send our condolences during this very difficult time. God bless you and give you strength. Our thoughts are with the family.
