Joseph Milardo Obituary

Joseph Milardo
Joseph (Joe) Milardo, age 83, passed away on April 7, 2025. He was born and raised in Middletown, CT, son of the late Carl and Angelina (Civitello) Milardo. He graduated Woodrow Wilson High School in 1960, enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1961. He was trained as a weapons specialist and mechanic in Denver, Colorado and proudly served at bases in Great Falls, Montana and Anchorage, Alaska. After leaving the Service, Joe returned home to Middlesex County, where he began his civilian career, married and raised his family. He was a tireless worker who excelled in the trades, specifically heating and air conditioning. Whether he was delivering home heating oil, installing and servicing air conditioning equipment, or estimating and sizing large commercial HVAC projects, Joe touched countless colleagues and customers through his strong work ethic and integrity. He was also grateful for the time he spent at the Portland Golf Course, as a member of the grounds crew and pro shop staff.
Joe will be remembered as a devoted son and brother, loving and proud father and grandfather, loyal and generous friend. He loved a good meal, especially beef cutlets with a well of mashed potatoes filled with corn. Joe preferred to be outdoors, tending to the yard, hunting and fishing, riding mountain bikes and his Harley Road King, going for walks, heading to Giants Stadium for a day of tailgating and cheering, enjoying the ocean, and in the winter, skiing. Joe was a decorated member of the National Ski Patrol, supporting Powder Ridge Ski Area. He deeply cherished the Ski Patrol community, especially the Monday Night Crew and the friendships that came from his many decades of volunteer service "on the mountain". Joe was also recognized as an honorary member of the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department.
The teenage passion of "Joe the Lion" was a far cry from the gentle patience of "Papa Joe". He grew old with grace and kindness and never stopped trying to do his best. He was truly a good man.
Joe is survived by his sister, Mary Johnson and husband Howard, brother, Jim Milardo and wife Sheila, daughters, Laurie Kelley and husband John, Barbie Donoghue and husband Tim, Lisa Catanzaro, son, Joe Milardo and wife Michelle, eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Joe's family would like to thank the healthcare heroes at Westview Nursing in Dayville, CT for their kindness and care. It won't be quite the same without "Jo-Jo" patrolling the West Wing.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 17. Visitation is 9:30AM -11:00AM, followed by Mass at D'Angelo Funeral Home in Middletown, CT. Burial will follow at the Veterans Cemetery.

I `worked´ with Joe as part of the Monday Night Crew at Powder Ridge. It wasn´t work, but it was the lifelong friendships made while on duty there that put a smile on your face. Joe was the best of the best; a friend that you could count on when things got hectic! He was a mentor to me and many other new patrollers! But he was much more than that; he was the best friend of any patroller and he was the helping hand for those who sought our aid. Godspeed Joe! Thank you for all the memories, Joe.

You have been so deeply missed by Kathie, Jeff, myself, Savannah and Azalea. Our girls will always love their Papa Joe. We will make sure your memory lives on in their hearts forever.

We will forever tell them stories and remind them of memories of our trips to the Cape and to Florida. Most of all Savannah will always remember you as the most patient Papa in the world. She misses her time with you just sitting outside on your stone bench, sorting through seed pods and watching the world go by. The joy that Savannah and Azalea brought to you was always so visible on your face.

Rest easy, Papa Joe. You are dearly missed, truly loved and will always be remembered as our family.

I knew Joe later in his life through our mutual friend, Kathie Puglisi. It was wonderful to witness the joy that Kathie and her family brought to Joe´s life; his tole as "papa" to her grandchildren, the annual family vacations to Florida, the holidays spent celebrating with her children and grandchildren. As a friend, I was fortunate to know Joe and listen to his stories about his Powder Ridge days, his riding days, and his love for Kathie and her family. Joe was certainly a good friend to all. I´m grateful to have known such an intelligent and caring person. Rest in peace, Joe.

Many words could be used to describe Joe Milardo. Passionate, intense, confident, and faithful to name a few. But none would be more accurate than friend. Joe Milardo is a legend! We first met as candidates for the Powder Ridge Ski Patrol in 1974. Joe was Candidate of the Year due to his work ethic, dedication and leadership, and he deserved it! As a founding member of the "Monday Night Crew" Joe pulled many of us more "junior" member's butts out of a few "tough" situations. And we always toasted our adventures after "sweep" with some appropriate "milk and cookies." Joe worked hard and he played hard! From packing into my old Astro van for a glorious day of skiing up north, to each of us jumping on our Harleys, the "Fab Five" spent many miles and smiles together. From Lake Tahoe out west, to Sunset Ribs, bar and grill in Niantic, oh, the stories that we shared. It's a good thing skis, vans and Harleys can't talk! I will always be thankful that God, his family and his other friends shared Joe us. We WILL all ride again someday! We love you, Joe!

Joe was a great guy. We patrolled together for many years at Powder Ridge. He was always there when he was needed with a good attitude and willingness to do get the job done. He also installed a new central air system in my house. It worked flawlessly for many years.
