PATRICK WATANABE Obituary

WATANABE, PATRICK SLOANE Patrick Sloane Watanabe, 48, of Middletown, Connecticut, died at his home on Saturday, January 7, 2017. Born in Hartford, CT, he was a lifelong resident of Middletown. He was the son of the late Gary Watanabe and Maria Brinkmann Watanabe DeNunzio of Durham. Patrick leaves his beloved wife of 22 years, Darlene (Michaud), and his children whom he cherished, Kobe, 15, and Maya, 13. He is also survived by his brother, Jonathan Watanabe, son of Kathleen Sheehan Watanabe, both of Middletown, and his stepfather, John DeNunzio of Durham. He also leaves his in-laws, Carol and Richard Michaud, many uncles and aunts, and a host of adoring nephews, nieces, and cousins, as well as countless lifelong friends. Patrick was a mentor and father figure to his brother Jon after their father’s death at 44. He and Jon shared many things, but most special was their bond over music and guitar playing. Patrick adored his family and was most proud of the accomplishments of his wife and children. Like his late grandfather Stanley, he loved to cook for family. He was a rotisserie master, and his chili was just fantastic. Patrick was a 1986 graduate of Middletown High School. As a student, he excelled in football and baseball. He was a proud member of the 1985 Blue Dragon State Championship football team. He played hockey for the Middlesex Red Devils throughout his youth, chauffeured to games by his mother at all hours to freezing rinks throughout Connecticut. His love of hockey was always on display; for every possible occasion, he had the appropriate hockey jersey. A lifelong lover of sports, he followed his teams by seasons: the Yankees, the Jets (who knows why?), and Les Montre’al Canadiens. Patrick retired from the Connecticut Juvenile Training Center in 2013, where he had worked as a youth services officer. We remember Patrick as a kind, gentle, and loving soul who has left us much too soon. His caring nature, dry sense of humor, and his wonderful laugh will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown. A funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in Patrick’s memory may be made to The Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, 183 North Mountain Road, Plainville, CT 06053. Rest in peace Patrick. My best friend when we were little kids living at McKenna drive. Even though it's been many years since we spoke, I still have a lot of great memories of my youth. I used to go over to his house almost every morning before school and hang out while eating breakfast. I remember Maria and Gary taking us to see Kiss in concert in, my first rock concert. I really wished I kept in touch with Pat. So sorry Maria for your loss. Love, Matthew Barnes. Boca Raton Florida.

I am both sorry and sadden to hear of the passing of my dear friend/brother we first met in snow school but became close when I moved back to Middletown in 85'86' we spent most everyday 24/7 together..... so many great memories packed into a short time most people thought we were brothers !!!! "The Oklahoma Trip" Mr. Andy shared with you left out some obstacles there's just one little obstacle I'd like to share with you it took Pat a few deep breaths between the laughing to tell me about the highway patrol chasing them for 10 miles the fact that they didn't know and Pat decided they should stop and take a picture in front of a sign that said welcome to Cuba Missouri which also allowed them to stay and visit Cuba for a day before they made it to me in Oklahoma....and Pats thoughts were he didn't think Andy's dads fiero went that fast..... was still a great memorable visit......so many stories so many laughs
Love you
RIP PATRICK WATANABE

Watanabe Family, I am so saddened to hear of your loss.

Though we haven't spoken as much in recent years I considered Patrick to be like a brother. He was one of my best friends as a teenager...and will always be considered one of my favorite people...the bond forged was that genuine. The few times I've been to Connecticut as an adult, we laughed at how the rapport was so immediate...there was no warming up, we jumped into conversation as though we had been together the day before. I know he was like that with a lot of people....Wonton had that gift.

One highlight that comes to mind was a spontaneous road trip to Oklahoma...I said "Pat, what do you want to do tonight?". He said "We should visit Dean in Oklahoma.".....I said "That's so ridiculous....we should do it.". And within moments we had scrabbled together a few hundred dollars, loaded up my dad's car and were rolling west to Stillwater. The short of it is....there were some obstacles....but we made it...to Broken Arrow Oklahoma, were Dean met us. It wasn't the most responsible thing we ever did....but we reveled in the adventure of it.

The last time I saw Patrick he told me how much he loved his wife and being a Dad. I remember thinking 'man that's nice'. I was happy for him.

I am saddened that I won't see my buddy anytime soon, but appreciative...to have had the time with him. What a blessing he was. Patrick Sloane Watanabe..... His wonderful spirit will continue to be among us... and watching over us....RIP 44...love you brother!

D, Kobe, Maya and family;
Patrick was such a dear friend to so many with such a kind heart and open ear. No conversation was too small for him to listen... he always cared. He lit up when talking about each of you; that is part of what made him such a special person.

May wonderful memories be in your hearts. My prayers and thoughts are with each of you and Patrick now.
love,

God bless...
