Tamara “Tammy” (Colegrove) McDowell Obituary

Tamara "Tammy" (Colegrove) McDowell, 38, of Middlefield, beloved wife of Steve McDowell, Jr., died peacefully Monday, June 25 at Middlesex Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Middletown, the daughter of Geoffrey and Janet (Johnson) Colegrove of Durham. Tammy had a love for sports and was an All-State athlete for Coginchaug Regional High School playing three sports. She played basketball for Central Connecticut State University, where she later became a coach with her long time friend, Kim Foley. Most recently, she was a physical education teacher for Adams Middle School in Guilford, where she was loved by both her students and fellow teachers.
Tammy is survived by her two sons, Andrew "AJ" and Jacob, both of Middlefield; her brother, Garth Colegrove and his wife, Kimberly, of Clinton; her sister, Alaina Colegrove and her fiancé, Ryan Jacob, of Middletown; her grandmother, Mary Colegrove, of New Britain; in-laws, Steven and Vicki McDowell; her sister-in-law, Mary-Beth McDowell; her beloved dog, Beau; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends and colleagues.
Tammy loved her boys most of all. Her fondest memories were spent at her family's cottage on Cedar Island in Clinton, kayaking in the water, building sand castles and collecting shells. Tammy could also be found on the basketball court, posting up "the guys," or training for road races with her sister, Alaina. Etched in our memories will be Tammy and Steve's exchange of vows in Bermuda, and the endless "Dark and Stormy's" consumed on their wedding cruise. Tammy has taught us all the meaning of courage and strength in the face of overwhelming adversity. Her positive attitude, graceful and humble heart, and infectious smile has changed our outlook on life and will remain with us forever.
On behalf of Tammy's family, we would like to thank Tammy's friends at Adams Middle School and all of the staff of the Middlesex Hospital Community who had cared for her, especially the Connecticut Oncology Group, Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, and Middlesex Hospital Hospice and Palliative Care. Your devoted patience and care for Tammy throughout the past several months has touched us and we will forever be grateful for all the love you have shown Tammy and our family.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. from Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Colman Church, Hubbard St., Middlefield. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for the benefit of her sons can be made to The Tammy McDowell Family Fund, 12 Burt Dr., Middlefield, CT 06455, or the Middlesex Hospital Weiss Hospice Unit, c/o Dept. of Philanthropy, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457. Having only met Tammy a few times, I knew instantly what kind of person she was. Despite what she was going through, she fought every step of the way. You couldn't have met a nicer person. She went to high school with my husband Steve and I heard nothing but great things about her. I have other friends that knew her and said the same thing. Words cannot express enough how sorry we are. She was a genuine, great person and it is a great loss for all of you and everyone around her. Please know you, your boys and her family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I grew up in Durham and had the great pleasure and honor of playing soccer, softball and basketball with Tammy at Coginchaug. I always admired her strength, skill, and athleticism. She was such a natural athlete. But mostly, what I remember about Tammy was her gentle nature and kind spirit. She was older than me, so I looked up to her. She was a great role model - and continues to be in spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with her family now and always. Those boys will forever have their very own angel. Sincerely, Katie (Penders) Lamin

I didn't know Tammy personally, but the outpouring of support and love shown at the benefit last year showed how much she impacted the lives of many. McDowell & Colegrove Families,
After a courageous battle with cancer, Tammy showed us dignity and strength during a very difficult time physically & emotionally. We will
truly miss her and we are sure the families will have a part of their heart missing forever, but the memories we will share with each other and keep her memory very alive for her boys!

Our most memorable event was the wedding cruise. The entire family & guests met and loaded the bus at the Pavilion which headed to the cruise terminal. The fun began and continued the entire time. The island of Burmuda was not happy with rain on arrival, but the sun began to shine and the wedding ceremony was performed
on a cliff over the edge of the water. What a wonderful background for Steve & Tammy to commit their love to each other in the presence of their family. They were on the newly wed game on the ship and we all had a great time watching them.

Tammy & Steve were so happy to be pregnant and a shower was held at Vicki & Steve's. There was so much happiness and joy when AJ came to his family. They bought a house. Another child was on the way and Jake was born.

The story is now changes with the diagnosis of cancer, but Tammy showed us that even cancer cannot stop her from being the solemate to Stevie and the greatest Mother to her boys. Even with much pain and weakness she fought to be there for them and not give in to this disease. Her life was cut too short, but the lessons she taught us will be in our hearts forever.

Stevie & the boys, may you know that you will be sourrounded by much support, strength, and love during the next few days. You also will see that that will continue for you in the days ahead. We will be there for you and Tammy's boys whenever you need us!
