Deborah (Deb) Jane Michalowski
Deborah (Deb) Jane Michalowski, 66, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, August 24, 2021.
Born on April 20, 1955, in Iowa City, IA, Deb was the daughter of John and Jane (Ciszak) Michalowski. The eldest of five siblings, she grew up in Iowa and Pennsylvania before her family moved to Illinois. Deb graduated from Shabbona High School in 1973. She worked various jobs at family owned Dog 'n Suds (Shabbona), a nursing home in Shabbona, and Dairy Queen in DeKalb. In 1975, her daughter Sara was born.
Deb then began her lifelong career in the service of others through Nursing in 1982. She graduated from from Kishwaukee College, became an LPN, then later, an RN. She worked as an ER nurse at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital for many years, and later, was a home health care, hospice and family practice Nurse.
In 1992, Deb began her career with the DeKalb County Health Department. In her 28 years career there, she took on many roles; Case Management, Family Planning, working with families and children through the WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) program, and also administered vaccinations to people in the community. She was so proud of her long career of helping others.
Deb was an intensely passionate and empathetic human, who loved her family, friends, music and the environment. She loved to Celebrate Day of the Dead, and give away lottery tickets and chocolate. She was a beautiful soul who will be greatly missed.
Deb is survived by one daughter and granddaughter, Sara (Matthew Swallows) Gosney and Maggie Swallows, her four sisters, Mary Michalowski, Julie Michalowski, Ann (Tim) Dieter, Ruth (George) Eng, and her niece and nephews, Samantha Eng, Alex Eng and Benjamin Eng.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Michalowski and Charlene "Jane" Michalowski, of Shabbona.
A casual Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Blumen Gardens, on Monday, September 13, 2021 from 4:00-6:30pm. Please feel welcome to come and go anytime, as there is no formal service schedule. Due to Covid-19 mandates, the family asks that you wear a mask within the indoor spaces at this gathering.
Deb loved flowers, but memorials can also be made to Hope Haven of DeKalb County in her memory.
