Mary C. "Katy" Hiatt 98, of DeKalb died Sunday, August 29, 2021, at Oak Crest -DeKalb Area Retirement Center. She was born September 24, 1922, in Aurora, IL, and was the daughter of Edward and Mary (O'Malley) McCabe.
Katy grew up in Maple Park, IL and attended Maple Park schools. She married Frederick W. Hiatt on July 23, 1949 at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1990.
During World War II she was a member of the Women's Army Corps. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb and Catholic Daughters #996. She loved to travel the world visiting Africa, China, Russia, Australia, Singapore, Norway, Denmark, and most of the United States. Katy loved spending her winters in South Padre Island, TX and she loved to work out at the gym until she was 94 years old.
Survivors include; sons Dan (Teresa) Hiatt of DeKalb and Pat Hiatt of DeKalb. Daughter; Kathy Hiatt of DeKalb. Grandsons; Sam (Megan) Hiatt of DeKalb, Andy Hiatt of DeKalb and Max Hiatt of DeKalb. Great-grandchildren; Hayes Halstead and Brynlee Hiatt. Sister; Virginia Kotas of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Frederick, son Michael, sister; Eleanor Bell and brother Tom "Hawk" McCabe.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, at 10:30am at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb with Father Dean Russell officiating. Burial will be immediately following the Mass at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, at 9:30am until the time of service. Memorials can be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb or Milestone in Rockford. Due to Covid-19 mandates masks will be required at all services at the church. We had such fun with Katy on a couple of pilgrimages with Fr. Black. She was always game for whatever we wanted to do. Loved her spirit and smile.
