Dear June, Wayne, Penny and Randy and Gary's family,

We are so saddened to learn of Gary's untimely passing. It's hard to believe how much time has passed since we were all running around at the Hill, and yet it seems like it was only yesterday. Fond memories of his easy smile and wit.

Our thoughts are with you, and will be on Monday,

Love, Peg, Joe. and kids

Some of my best childhood memories were summers spend on the Hill with Gary as his little tag-along sidekick. I was his fishing buddy. He was my sounding board and sometimes we were both each others antagonist. Gary had a gentle easy way about him that belied his keen whit and sharp intelligence. He could probe and cajole, criticize and praise without ever really passing judgement. His analysis of my boyhood issues and situations were always spot-on and I always valued his viewpoint. He made me feel special, when I was really nothing more than a younger nuisance. I valued his respect and dearly respected his opinions.

With the inevitable passing of time and circumstance -we grew apart and led our own separate lives. However, on the rare occasions when we would get together - it was as if the mantle of time and distance had evaporated instantaneously. It was as if I was lying again on the bank of a stream, pole in hand, fishing his mind as he was mine - just like we did 45 years ago.

I wish we made the time to reconnect as adults. Many of us erroneously assume that we will have the time to catch up with loved ones in the future - that we can someday do and say the things we always wanted to, when it's the right time and circumstance. The paradox of this thinking is that all we really have is the here and now. The future is not an absolute, not a guarantee. It is nothing but a hopeful construct of our minds.

Plans to visit each other were never made firm. I'll never know how good the fishing was in South Carolina. We waited too long. He'll never glean the solutions to my vexations of youth. My questions will never be answered. My answers will never again be questioned - we waited too long.
