Robert Winslow Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Alfred Winslow (U.S. Army, Retired) lived a long, remarkable life defined by service, leadership, curiosity, and a kindness that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles Winslow and Mary Van Brunt Winslow, Robert grew up alongside his siblings, Charles (Chuck) Winslow and Elizabeth (Betty) McLain. From an early age, his natural charisma and warmth made him a beloved presence-someone who could make a friend out of every stranger. Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine (Krauss) Winslow; parents Charles and Mary Winslow; brother Charles Winslow; and his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Winslow McLain.
A graduate of West High School in Madison, Wisconsin (Class of 1953), Robert went on to earn his Engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958 and later his master's degree in Engineering Management/OR/SA from Purdue University in 1965. A proud Badger, he played trumpet in the University of Wisconsin Drum and Bugle Corps and followed the ensemble with pride long after graduation.
Immediately after completing his undergraduate degree, Robert began what would become a decorated 23-year career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Serving in the Vietnam War, Robert led construction Battalions that built bridges, runways, and entire military posts, then followed by tours in Italy and Germany. Rising to the rank of Colonel, he held numerous leadership roles-including Division Engineer, Personnel Management Officer, and Facilities Engineer-each marked by unwavering integrity and dedication. His final assignment brought him to Fort Douglas, Utah, where he chose to remain despite opportunities for further advancement, including a promotion to Brigadier General. His military awards were numerous and speak to his exceptional service and steadfast devotion to his country.
Even after retirement from active duty, Robert remained committed to supporting Veterans, volunteering as a Red Coat Ambassador at the George Whalen VA Hospital in Salt Lake City. His compassion, humility, and ability to truly listen brought comfort to many.
Robert began a second distinguished career in the private sector as Vice President and Partner at Shipley Associates (1986–2017). He traveled the world-Japan, India, China, and beyond-working with Fortune 500 companies and establishing himself as an expert in federal proposal writing and management. More importantly, he immersed himself in the cultures he encountered, building relationships and learning from every person he met. His genuine interest in people-their stories, their origins, their experiences-was one of his most defining qualities.
In his retirement years, Robert made his home at Sagewood at Daybreak Retirement Community, where he led multiple committees, enriched community life, and left an indelible imprint on residents and staff alike. His sharp mind, quick wit, and generous heart made him a cherished part of the Sagewood family.
Robert was the proud father of Michael Winslow (Mountain View, CA), Suzanne Winslow (Salt Lake City, UT), and Jessica (Jesse) Winslow (Salt Lake City, UT), and the loving grandfather of Keegan Maloney (Athens, GA) and Jack Maloney (Albuquerque, NM). He was formerly married to Christine Krauss Winslow (1962–1983) and Kathi Whitman (1994–2008). Throughout every chapter of his life, he remained a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend-steadfast in his love, support, and belief in those he cared for.
A man of refined tastes and simple joys, Robert loved a perfectly prepared tenderloin wrapped in bacon, the bold flavors of Nepalese, Indian, and Vietnamese cuisine, and anything with a hint of spice. He adored all dogs, however American Rough Collies-his beloved "Lassie" dogs-carried a soft spot throughout his life for their gentle loyalty. He continued to follow and remain loyal to the Green Bay Packers throughout their many years of ups and downs but also developed a love of the Kansas City Chiefs, following his time in Kansas City. However, hands down his proudest accomplishment was the raising of his three children, and beyond a shadow of a doubt they were his most loved part of his life. He was incredibly proud of his two grandson's, Keegan (GA) and Jack (NM) and was delighted that both chose professions to defend and protect the United States.
Robert Winslow was more than the sum of his accomplishments. He was a man of heart-sweet, thoughtful, endlessly curious, and wholeheartedly dedicated to the people around him. His life was full, his relationships rich, and his impact profound.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by family, friends, colleagues, and the many lives he touched with his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness.
Family and friends will be celebrating this great man at a Celebration of Life Ceremony in January 2026.

Yesterday

I met Robert in water aerobics, at Sagewood and we became such good friends. He would wink at me across the pool and I
would wink back, then we would just keep smiling at each other across the pool. We were just
fun friends. I sure miss him.
