Jack Phil Carspecken, 90, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born June 15, 1935, in Burlington, he was the son of George Lewis and Lily Vivian Cox Carspecken. On Sept. 20, 1958, he married Sharon Orth in Burlington. She preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2021, just two days shy of their 63rd anniversary.
He was a graduate of Burlington High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Alaska during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956.
Jack was a third-generation owner and operator of Des Moines County Abstract Company, a family business proudly owned and operated by the Carspecken family for nearly a century. He took great pride in his work and found real joy in uncovering the stories behind the homes and properties of Des Moines County. His deep appreciation for local history and his dedication to his community shone through in everything he did.
He was a dedicated member of First Congregational Church, where he faithfully served on the Mission Board and as a Trustee. Jack also gave generously of his time through the Lions Club and the Elks Club.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Jack was an accomplished athlete in high school and cherished his memories of competing in the Drake Relays. In later years, he enjoyed bowling with friends in a local league and never missed an opportunity to cheer for his beloved Chicago Bears and Cubs.
Jack had a deep appreciation for nature, finding joy in the simple pleasures of bird feeding, fishing, and canoeing.
Survivors include four daughters, Karen (Kent) Belmont of Oskaloosa, Ann (Bryan) Humphrey of Burlington, Julie (Calvin) Gaddis of Burlington, Joanie (Bill) Price of Burlington; grandchildren, Cody Landgrebe, Zachary Belmont, Grant Humphrey, Maggie Peterson, Keith Gaddis, Alexandra Stetson, Paige Stahly, Sydney Terranella, Sophie Freeman, Sunny Hunt, Arnold and Sergio Price; great-grandchildren, Zoe Landgrebe, Memphis Landgrebe, Peyton Humphrey, Porter Humphrey, Jack Humphrey, Rayeigh Peterson, Kaedi Gaddis, Acacia Gaddis, Abel Stahly, Willa Stahly, Oslo Stahly, Teddy and Rowan Stetson, Sage and Kalea Terranella, Vivian and Maggie Freeman, Isaiah Price, and one more on the way.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, David Lewis Carspecken and one grandson, Shea Belmont.
Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, at First Congregational Church, 313 N. 4th St., Burlington.
The funeral service for Mr. Carspecken will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at First Congregational Church with Pastor Jim Francisco officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the First Congregational Church.
