JoAnn Newell Strong, 91, peacefully passed on Oct. 18, 2021, in Scottsdale, Ariz., after experiencing a brief illness. She had been a resident for nearly three decades of both Fort Madison, and then St. Augustine Beach, Florida.
JoAnn was born on Feb. 4, 1930, in Ottumwa, to Donald and Edith Newell. After earning a teaching degree from Drake University in 1951, she worked as an elementary school teacher in both Des Moines and Fort Madison.
In 1991, she and her husband, Donald Beryl Strong, retired to St. Augustine Beach. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church of St. Augustine, Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood, and Chi Omega Sorority.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her loving parents and devoted husband.
She is survived by her only sibling, Jo Ellen Coleman of St. Augustine; four children, Susan Strong of Jacksonville, Fla., Scott (Mary) Strong of Chicago, Ill., Nancy (Eric) Melin of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Brad Strong of Burlington; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held and her remains will be interred at the Memorial Presbyterian Church of St. Augustine at a future date.
